Blue water cruising boat . . .

I agree entirely. When we bought our 1980 boat she had a new Perkins engine (M92B) and was fully fitted out with Raymarine electronics. Two large chartplotters, below decks autopilot and nine Raymarine instruments. These things would have been big ticket items has we needed to do the replacement.
This was the point of my post, just because a boat has many years on it doesn't mean everything is worn out or past its sell by date. The kit on board could be newer than a 10yr old boat.

Hello,

I haven't read all the posts but here is my tuppence worth.

We set off in 2015 initially was going to just get into the Med , however we changed plans and ended up in the Caribbean. The first thing to do is establish where you think you may end up. If you are planning Pacific cruising I would recommend having a water maker, that may mean a generator etc the list grows as does the room to store all these things so a bigger boat may suit better.

If bluewater sailing is just the Med I would buy a beamy modern boat the Dufours/Bens Bavs fit the bill for this they are decent boats and work well in the sun .

I would prepare it for bluewater cruising here in UK with bimini, solar panels, perhaps wind gen, decent anchor and rode, sea berths additional water tanks, bigger gas containers, auto pilot or hydrovane, fans at all berths down wind rig communications etc........ the list goes on but it will pay you to get it all done here before you go, maybe not all that for just Med.

Our Malo 36 has been fantastic but we are usually one of the smallest boats in marinas (if we go in ; ) ) . We have 400l of water 2 x 6kg Gas (propane) 235l diesel and loads of stowage........ but if more than two of us its not perfect. The aft cabin is small by modern standards.
We were thinking of going into the pacific but decided it wasn't for us in this boat ..... NOT for seaworthy reasons!

If going again I would get a bigger boat if I could afford it. Buy something that has all the kit already fitted, spend lots of time getting to know the boat inside out ...........now where is that "super Maramou"

Thoughts and opinions on these please?
Minor detail, put tick boxs on your list for waste water tanks for holding grey and black waste water and a wind vane steering kit. Don't know where you are going but the former are becoming more and more of a prerequisite. They are also responsible sailing if you go for a boat big enough to have them.

Honest question, what else is it that you are really looking for?

You say "comfort at sea and safety" but that could achieve on 1/4 of the price (or even less); and the smaller it gets, the more easily it will be short handed, eg how much of it is a certain image, or placating the wife with home comforts (catamaran?)?

For me, "no need for crew", would be my ceiling (unless their job was to wear a bikini but, pressumably, your wife likely won't let you have that), but I tend to think that then points to smaller and less technological boats.
