Blue Green Algea Bloom

The marina at Preston docks has very poor water quality, notices are posted saying there is temporary blue green algea bloom and, that contact with the water should be avoided, this condition has worsened over the past four years and, in the recent warm weather has deteriorated further. The appearance is of green water, with large patches of thicker "pea soup" and great blotches of what appear to be mould type fungus. The smell is obnoxious and the whole area smells.
I think it is dangerous to humans and, have sent a letter to the local council requesting action. Does anyone have experience of this water condition and, if so can they give an opinion?.

Yes, it appears on Rutland Water regularly, and has in fact been responsible for the deaths of many sheep, dogs and wild fowl. They have treated the area with straw - really to little avail - suggest you search on Google or look at the Anglian Water Site!

This condition was reported in West Cornwall on Loe Bar some years ago and was also responsible for the deaths of some animals including dogs. It is dangerous to humans, too. Plymouth Marine Laboratory might be able to help with more information. Use Google or Yahoo UK and Ireland to find their site.

The last years....

....this kind of algae blooming is happenning every summer in the Baltic Sea. And it gets worse for every year.
According to the experts here in Sweden you cannot tell by eye if its an poisionous variety or not. The local authorities performs laboratory tests and if needed, afterwards issue warnings for the areas affected.
I´ve been told that this poisionous variety is only dangerous if swallowed and bathing is not dangerous in itself. Small kids and animals (dogs I presume) should not be allowed bathing when warnings are issued.

This phenomena really scares me. Two weeks ago I sailed across the Baltic Sea from Lithuania to Sweden. Right in the middle, about 60 nm fron nearest land, there was no water anymore, there was Peasoup. It was so dense that the waves were noticeable affected and I would not dare to start the engine, risking to clog the cooling system.
This seems to be happening all over Europe. How will it end?
