Well, yes, I do have one but rarely 'wear' it as we like people to talk to us in marinas and anchorages.
Ours is Royal Artillery Yacht Club which I have belonged to for thirty odd years. Aside from the annual club dues (about 15 quid), it costs me nothing.
My view is that this is a genuine privilege as our membership is limited to serving and retired gunners whose boats satisfy the admiralty requirements and wish to apply for the warrant. I also think that it is abit of fun to have a flag which is a little bit different and I am quite proud of it.
Civilian organisations such as the CA (wonderful though it is), IMHO, cheapens itself by offering their blue ensigns to anyone willing to part with (I think) about 112 quid a year. Perhaps it would be more widely respected if they made it conditional on some sort of cruising 'achievement'?
I have much greater respect for a boat with OCC and a red duster rather than a RYS on the transom!
ok ok enough, it was not a wind up I actually do have a blue Ensign (warrant No on request if you ask) I just wondered what the consensus of opinion was amongst the boat world seems abit of ribbing is expected. However I am proud of my Regiment and the opportunity to sail it gave me and therefore proud to fly its Ensign.
HWMBO flys a blue ensign and is proud to do so, he is entitled to do so after completing over 20 years in the royal navy submarine service risking life, limb (and liver) serving his country. Catty, jealous remarks both to his face in marinas and on this board are frankly childish. Yes, buy one in a chandlery if you really want to, but you won't feel the pride in being entitled to fly one legitimately.
In my experience the only time that people make comments about boats with blue ensigns is when the owners make it clear that they think they are a cut above the rest.
Hi smarie and welcome to the forum, I did enjoy that piece you did on India, very informative.
Please don’t be disillusioned, There are a few on here that take a delight in being impolite. They usually burn themselves out after a couple of months.
As an ex-serviceman I like to see blue ensigns flying (though I don`t have one) and the way I see it if Trouville has one then they must be OK, as he is indeed a true sailer.
Thanks UncleAlbert, notice you are an ex-submariner if the dolphin and the poem are any indication. HWMBO is a regular contributor to this site, but has stopped contributing to blue ensign threads!
BLUE FLAG W#NKERS!, have just done 2.5yrs live aboard and have met only 1 or 2 nice BFW's. The rest look down on everyone and thing they are the best sailors. But these are the ones that usually have the wife's on board who can't even switch on the VHF let a lone call a mayday. The G&T lot with no sense!. Red ensigns on a whole r alot friendly & helpful. UP THE REDS!!!
