Late reply this, (been away).
Vetus catalogue says

"WARNING, extraction ventilators should never be operated when the engines are running. The suction power of the engine may over rotate the ventilator and cause the motor to burn out"

Surely they should always suck, as this will discharge overboard.
If they blow, fumes will be blown out through all openings in the engine space, which could mean fumes into the living space.

Not strictly technical

My last MFV had a big Woods fan that had been turned the wrong way round. Whilst this was bad engineering it was great, whilst working in the engine room, to take a breather under the fan. The wash of freezing air was better than a shower.
