Picked on up yesterday on the daggerboard just off the Naze.

I had seen it but it was going to pass to leward under the Genoa, so I asked First Officer to make sure we were clear. She said we were missing it by a good distance of about 5m. Just as we were passing the floats suddenly started trolling towards us. Instant stop! We were hooked by the retrival line so we dropped sails and waited to settle as we swung to the wind. Then pulled up the dagger board and it popped out.

Once we could see the bloody thing it was clear it had a floating line running a good distance along the surface. I was sore tempted to pick it up.

It is all down to the R rate
The lobster pot virus will have been spreading exponentially for the last two months.
Boat propellers are the only known cure to lobster pot virus, also known as lobpot 20 in its current mutation.
I believe the government is actively looking at financially helping sail boats , with the aim of having them clear the eat coast, something in the order of £ 1000 per lobpot 20 cleared from the water.

Always feel sorry for the crustations caught in the pots which are cut from the line. Although I guess it's just suffering death by starvation as opposed to death by being boiled alive.

Same for discarded fishing netting that catches on wrecks. Divers call this "Ghost Fishing".

What went through my mind when I saw the floats dragging towards the boat was ...

I do hope I can get this thing off without having to ask for help... The bloody Gaulitiers would absolutely love the opportunity to say "this proves that boating is unsafe..

don t feel sorry for any lobsters/crabs/fish left in a lost pot-----it is an oft repeated maritime myth -----in a few days the pot will be empty-----i was a lobster fisherman for years.

Doing it..

Half way through the entire effort whilst trying to make sure it didn't escalate I thought I must mark the position of the pot. Then it popped out and I was into looking after the boat as we drifted away.. so I forgot to mark the position:mad:

Lobster pots always worry me in places like Portland Bill, Bardsey Sound etc. Good that you had no damage or other problems.
