Today is “Australia Day”... that day we celebrate the founding of this wonderful Nation. As part of the ceremonies, we recognise certain people who throughout the year, have contributed to a good cause.
Now I hasten to report that I didn’t get a mention (once again)..neither did “oldsaltoz”, but you can understand that, he lives in Queensland.

Now no one on this BB representing OZ, has worked as hard as I have to promote good relations between the Poms and Oz… Hardly have I ever said its hot (today its 36*C... last night was cold, got down to 18*C, only had the electric blanket on 2)

Perhaps once or twice I have said we can thrash the pants off the Poms in cricket, footy,( wish you would learn Aussie Rules), tennis and in most sports ( sometimes we are diplomatic and let you win something , just in case you take your bat and ball and go home.)

I am annoyed at the oversight, particularly as I am a direct descendant of two “First Fleeter's .. yes they were shipped out to start the Great Nation, by the Pommie Legal system. I might go and see the PM tomorrow and threaten to go back to UK …

What would you say to him if you were me ???

Wonder if they know our two relations that got shipped out ?

Blame it on the shop stewards we shipped in the 1950's / 60's for your problem.

Don't get too downhearted. I've been doing my best for Queen and country for the last umteen years, but has Her Majesty seen fit to reward me in the birthday or new year lists? Not a bit of it, no MBE, nothing!

I've even spent some time in your wonderful country, and may possibly come back at some time. I agree that your footy is a wonderful game, and I've been to Subiaco a few times to watch the Dockers. The sailing round Perth was quite nice as well.

Just forget the snub from your PM, and go and enjoy Australia day /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

what is your covernment's definition of a 'good cause'? most governments' idea of a good cause is limited to things that raise more revenue or keep them in power, neither of which i'd care to be honoured for.

we have a few other categories- stars of popular culture (in the hope that it will generate votes) and senior civil servants (did 'yes minister' reach your tv?). very rich people (campaign funds). succesful athletes (reflected glory).

aren't i in a cynical mood today!

Things are obviously changing. On my way into work (-2deg C outside!), I heard on the radio that 'Strine' was on its way out. Apparently the 'flat nasal vowels' (I think that is what they said) are being modified into more 'mellifluous(?)' tones. Sounds as if Oz is speaking Essex.

Light under bushel

I'd tell you to stop being so self deprecating. Shyness is the curse of the Ocker. If only the English had shipped out a few loudmouths among all those Irish thieves, Australia would have become the great country we all know it should be.
