Blatant non boaty question re mobile phone provider

Now been with giffgaff a couple of months and find it pretty good. My best mates also on GG so we can chat at length for free, Mrs Moron is on another network so can't do the same with her but that doesn't matter. Only downside is that I occasionally lose mobile signal at home and get a message 'no SIM inserted' I can usually restore it by turning off and on again but it's slightly annoying. I damaged the SIM slightly so may ask GG to send a new one. Apart from that, it's very good and the £7.50 goody bag is more than adequate.

I use GiffGaff as PAYG, I make very few calls, if I need to make a call, I ring someone then quickly stop the call, they usually ring back and it costs me nowt. I use a goody bag when on hols because it allows me to tether the phone to the netbook, works perfectly.

As others have said, Giffgaff uses the 02 network. Coverage maps are unreliable: I got an 02 phone on contract and had to cancel as it didn't work at home - almost zero signal. The girl in the 02 shop lived 50 yards away from me and said she had a perfect 4G signal. I could only get a "one bar" signal by standing in an upstairs bay window.

Switched to Plusnet which uses the EE network - but cheaper than EE. See what network works best where you are.....

The reason I swapped to GG from BT was because I could not get any signal at home on BT except from the attic bedrooms. I checked various coverage maps and also asked visitors to the house, postie, plumber and friends what signal they got. This led me to O2 and the cheapest access to the O2 network is GG.

I've been with Vodafone for years but the signal at my home since moving to the IOW is pathetic so I had to use the seemingly short life span VF Sure Signal box, of which I'm now on my third. I've since bought O2, EE, and 3 £5 PAYG Sim's and tried them all, none of which are any better but I'm moving to 3 as they have a free neat little App which enables me to use my phone through my home WiFi - it works perfectly

Just a cautionary note about auto top-ups. I had my giffgaff account set to top up by £20, with a max of 3 top ups per month. I use a Windows laptop on the boat, tethered to my mobile. In the middle of the night, Windows decided to download a massive update, which I think kept stalling and restarting. In the morning, all my goodybag data had been swallowed by Windows, and my account then went on to PAYG data, which had then automatically topped up by £20 no fewer than 3 times! I have now disabled virtually every Windows background action I can find, and I've set my phone as a Windows "metered connection" which should stop it downloading big updates. I've also disabled auto top-up with giffgaff (although I turn it back on whenever I go abroad, in case of emergency use).

Although the windows updates are a pain they are really worth taking in order to keep your laptop secure.

Another vote for Giffgaff. Been with them now for over 2 years. i like the flexibility that others have referred to and the online support and help is very good.

I've been on GG for3 years. No problems.

One snag is that if you don't use your goodybag credit up in the month, you lose it.

I've just put SWMBO on to 1pMobile which uses the EE network
£10 credit lasts for 4 months, calls 1p minute, texts 1p, and data 1p per mb.
Assuming it does as it says on the tin, it seems a bargain.
If it works OK, i'll probably change myself.
