After speniding the last six weekends scraping, sanding and using what I now know is useless antifoul remover, the hull of my 29 foot boat in an effort to remove 8 layers of antifouling and four layers of epoxy, I decided I had had enough. Got a recommendation from a friend and used Mick Oliver to blast the boat with fine glass. Best thing I ever done. Mick did an excellent job, taking off the antifoul and epoxy with minimal of effort without damaging the gelcoat. It took three hours and I can now see a have a couple of minor blisters which can easily be dried out and repaired and he has done superb job. I have heard of a number of horrors with sand blasting, but the result Mick gave me was excellent. If anyone would like his number let me know. He covers East Anglia and the South East.

By the way, I am not Mick or have anything to gain from this.

I was using Seajet 361 and left it on for 6 hours ensuring it didn't dry out. It took off the first coat of antifouling and slightly touched the second coat, but given the price per pot of around £65 it would have cost £520 to remove all coats and then that still wouldn't have removed the epoxy!!

This compared very unfavourably to £8 to £10 per foot that blasting cost which removes all within a few hours (rather than weeks) and no horrible scratches in gel coat.

Contact details for Mick are 01206 251255. If any one does decide to use him, mention my name.

Thanks

Andrew

Re: Removall 610<sigh>

um, if you Google for Removall, you'd get a clean hull without the grp-removing qualities associated with sand or slurry blasting. 75 foot hull cleaned in 24hours including waiting overnight for it to loosen old antifoul.

...but I don't want to spray the hull, risk the problems associated with getting the stuff on the painted topsides, and it is expensive....

Agreed- the less damage to the top sides the better. Didn't have any damage at all, not a scratch not a mark. Just hosed the boat down after it was completed and all done.
