My freshly painted transom is covered in black diesel smoke/stain after only one week. What could be the cause? The Volvo 2003 is running well.

I assume the black smoke is from your engine and there are a few possible causes. Start with the easy ones, starting and rapid acceleration tend to cause black smoke from some engines. Low load/ticking over while stationary may be another. Other causes may be blocked air filter and faulty injector but if the engine is running well across the full power range this may be less likely. Any more info wold help in pinning it down.
