its hoovering to see what e-mail addresses don't get bounced back (eg are potentially valid), and uses something approaching normal text to avoid being rejected by spam filters.....

did it have any graphics in it?

if so, they may well be corrupted with a bit of code that 'phones home' to confirm that the e-mail has been opened.....

be careful even opening spam with a web browser interface.....

Doesn't need any code in. I was trialing mass mailers for a news letters in work. One of the mailers simply put a red dot alongside a mail address after it returned a 'user not known' message. All you needed to do was send a blank message.

The mailer also had a feature where you entered the domain name (ie @ybw.com) and it would fill in the user-name starting with aaa...a then aaa...b etc.

Easy to fish for e-mail address to spam.
