Must have been cold last night, 08:00 this morning there was a thin layer of ice on the marina. Mostly gone now. Don't recall seeing that before.

Were you there in Jan 2010 . . .

Apparently there's an effect that the spring that partially feed Shotley
feeds with fresh water that freezes more easily.
If it then thaws it then leaves that fresh water for the next night's freeze.
This is especially true during the still waters of the lock-maintenance week.

I don't think we'll be seeing the sea freezing around here in the near future. The last time I can remember significant ice was when I took this in Maldon. It is in my '97 folder, whether this is correct or not I'm not sure. In fact, I think we also had ice in the river in the early 2000s.

I was, i can see my old boat on J pontoon in your first pic. I remember that snow, we arrived one weekend and had to dig the patio doors open, was a mobo in those days.

Funny you should say that, was talking to Miriam this afternoon and she said that, makes sense. Of course, the lock is closed this week too.

So enough fresh water to promote freezing in winter, but not enough to kill off the salt-water weed and beasties on our hulls.

Remarkable co-incidence; in your photo LO 422 Letitia 11 (or 111?), I've just been posting photo's of two cocklers in the Gaff Rigged Worldwide FB this morning, Letitia (a ADLS) in Lowestoft harbour 2018, and Letitia 111 at Tollesbury 2004 when she was light blue. I can't see from your 1997 Maldon photo whether 11 or 111 - but it looks like 11.

Actually it's 111:

I never knew her as Letitia 111, but I remember when she was brought to Tollesbury by Roy Lewis in the early 70s. She had a for'ard wheelhouse, offset quite low on the starb'd side (IIRC), leaving the aft deck clear for handling the nets. His mate was Frank Dibley, and Paul Bloss and I were deckie learners. Blossy went on to the Ross boats out of Lowestoft and I got involved with both sorts of barges.

Letitia was bought by Michael Feather, one of my musician friends, in the mid 90s and he and his wife did a fine job converting her for use as a yacht, and were very active in the Old Gaffers at the time.

Bloody peasants. I mean pedants. Even if they are correct.

I take it you'd refrain from 'pedantry' and accept the deal if someone owed you £111 but only paid you three?

Of course...! A paragon like you would never stoop to such low pedantry, would you...?

Yer. Right.

At least I know that I am in good company, now that Black Diamond has followed my example in typing it as one occasionally says it.

Quite funny as, I know it's wrong but, I say 'four' as 'one-vee' and 'seven' as 'vee-one-one'. Note strange as folk.
