Greetings all,

I'm hoping to cross Biscay next summer (05) at the start of a year's sailing with my family. We've been across the Southern North Sea a few times but this would be our first proper offshore trip.

As a consequence I've been looking for a rally in which to participate but can't find one setting off after June. I appreciate the need to leave a sensible weather window (especially in light of this year!) but don't want to take the children out of school any earlier than necessary.

Does anyone know of a rally leaving Falmouth more like mid-July? Or anyone interested in putting together our own?

We'll be on a Westerley Corsair and the children will be 7 and 9.

Thanks

Trouble is if there was a rally it would have a departure date which may not fit the nice weather window! many races/rallys suffer because they have a set departure date.
If you get the boat to Falmouth you will meet others waiting to head off, and every day weather is discussed at length on the pontoon, you've also got the coastguard centre on the headland to go up and chat with. Get to the pontoons in front of the museum next to the RNLI and you're sure to meet several other yachts planning the trip to Coruna or Bayona.... we left with five other boats and that was in November when we should have all been somewhere warmer!

The Biscay Triangle is a rally which leaves from Torquay for La Corunna at the end of July. There is then a formal leg to La Trinity from where boats make their own way home. There is no requirement to complete the course so you can join in for the first leg then do your own thing - some boats carry on down the coast to the Med or to the Canaries for an Atlantic crossing. Others explore the Spanish Rias.

The organisers are Blue Water Rallies. Details and a report of this year's event are at www.yachtrallies.co.uk. The event is sponsored by Yachting Monthly and a report is due to appear in the November issue.
