Biscay in late September - Frist Time

Leixoes was a shitehole when I last visited ( garbage & dead rats don't do it for me), so on last trip bypassed & went into Oporto - Marina Afurada, much nicer & local bus service to get into town if needed.

I've read that review too, not my experience a couple of weeks ago.

So generally speaking... if bad weather is due then the best thing is to stay well out to sea on the Portuguese coast? I've never been South of Lands End so I suppose I'm unfamiliar with Atlantic rollers.

If you cross from Ushant to La Coruna, you will be at least 50 miles off most of the time, so if, shitty weather is forecast, heading in for shelter will take some time, staying out the usual option so get a good forecast beforehand. Turning the corner you will be in company with shipping, also heading toward the TSS off Finistere, so best to stay clear inside that route IMO. Outside that line, its seas churned up along the continental shelf which will be your concern, so again a good forecast is necessary. Along the portugese coast, shipping will be heading to the next TSS, so avoid. On my last trip, we had bad forecasts, but there was a window of lower winds just off the coast, which allowed us to go various legs down south. Remember, that in bad weather, many of the harbours along the coast will be closed to any traffic. After leaving La Coruna, good shelter if caught out, is behind the small islands near Vigo, The other problem inshore, can be fishing pots & nets.

Been across N-S 3 times. First time was from Hastings or somewhere down that way. We nearly hit Ushant twice at night (lack of charts as skipper - not me - too mean to buy them for a delivery trip) then motored the whole way across to la Coruna.

Second time was on our 27-footer from the Scillies to La Coruna. We left 2.30 on a Saturday afternoon and arrived in La Coruna dawn on the Wednesday after four nights at sea. Sailed the whole way. http://znoy8.co.uk/biscay.html

3rd time was a 42 ft HR, again from the Scillies to La Coruna, three nights at sea. An easy, relaxing trip.

Times one and two had no serious issues getting round Finisterre from LC. La Coruna is one of my favourite places, a great wee city and a perfect landfall if crossing for the first time IMO.

Coming back - only done it once, and it was a bit harder. Camarinas to Waterford. Left on a Tuesday lunchtime, arrived Waterford Tuesday. http://znoy8.co.uk/biscay2.html
