Birds that crap on your decks..

When in Dartmouth I had the problem for about a week, I borrowed a shotgun, shot two seagulls and hung their carcasses over my boom, I never had another bird on my decks or any bird poo for another 18 months, thats even after the birds carcasses were dumped. I've done it since, in another harbour, no probs! It's an old trick, taught to me years ago. Works with crows/rooks aswell, in the country.

I tried that myself and it does work on the original problem.
However, does anyone have any good ideas for filling lots of little holes in my coachroof?

I have a real problem with Cormorant crap at my mooring at Wicor, I've partially solved it by putting tensioned s/steel mig wire 3 inches above my spreaders on both main and mizzen. I put my self in the mind of the offending bird and came to the conclusion that the one thing I wouldnt want to see across the threshold was cheesewire at knee level!

I also have a long bungee chord also at 3inch height all along the booms. The birds now tend to roost on the neighbouring boats.

I notice that there is a nationwide cull of Cormorants, bloody good thing too.

mmm - wouldnt go into print about shooting shytehawks, they are a protected species. maybe you shot some marinised pidgeons .........

See you're back to talking your usual bollocks.

Seagulls are not a protected species at all although all birds are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Licences are issued allowing some landowners or occupiers to kill certain pest species of seagull and nests and eggs can be destroyed under licence in order to prevent serious damage to agriculture, preserve public health or air safety, and to conserve other wild birds.

There are also restrictions on the methods of killing – poisons are prohibited except under special license.

hello jimi

nice to hear from you again - fit and well I see ..... in robust argumentitive confrontational health - I was wondering where you have been lurking - ornothology was my last guess.

anyway - try this http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-1419

I think these gulls are protected birds .... but of course am happy to be corrected if I am mistaken

so skipper gunhappy on his yacht cant just pop off and kill seagulls indiscriminatly, though I guess pigeons dressed as gulls may be an acceptable excuse .......... unless you know better of course.

and of course, you normally do think you know better ....... ah well - as you say ....... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif bollocks

Again your usual utter rubbish dressed up in authoritative guise.... aka bullshit. If you took the trouble to read and digest what you'd published the link to, you'd see that what you've published is a list of birds which happen to be protected in special protection areas and not a list of birds with special protection. In general herring gulls are afforded exactly the same protection under UK law as the humble pigeon.

hey jimi - you gotta lighten up m8, you continue like that and I will think you are a real ars.ehole.

as usual you style is over the top and quite offensive - are you from scotland, a little man with a big chip on his shoulder, or just a permantly angry person ?

anyway - I go from personal experience, when I wanted to kill some effing herring gulls nesting on my roof. I was told they are a protected species - by mr plod - snuff them and I get done ....... told me by mr plod. later, being woken by the effers at dawn but not nesting on my roof, I again seek a permanant solution - to be told the same thing.
so - you are now telling me they are not protected, but are fair game. maybe you ought tell mr plod.

none of my business, but where do you live ? jura - I hear they eat gulls up there.

so - leave off the shi.t jimi, or take more happy pills .......... or else you are going to be of another place sooner rather than later, you gotta learn to chill out a little more.

listen ya dick (you started the slanging match) you ain't my m8, and yet again if you had taken the trouble to read and understand .. it do'nt matter if they were herring gulls, pigeons or sparrows ... and I have no intention of sharing any of my personal details avec un cycletouriste comme tu.

nah - I dont think you are french ...... good try.

so I guess we will agree to disagree - (thinks 'quelle con') ... oops - shouldnt think out loud.

Not as bad as this though.............

Who are you calling skipper gunhappy? They are but flying marine rats and cause huge amounts of damage to boats, buildings, pavements and health, they are a damn nuisance and need to be culled, not all species, but some of them. They look wonderful flying around big rocks etc, but on a town street or boat they are but a pest.
