Some recently posted to the effect that some "how to" articles are a pointless; such as "how I planted an acorn to grow the oak to build my gaffer".

I need to be a bit careful, but how about the one in PBO for stopping water getting in when you're cleaning your log sensor. You've got to make up a sort of fother sail, sew on some bits of rope, pas it under the boat, tie it on and then remove the sensor. Should only take about an hour I'd have thought (leaving aside actually making the contraption).

Surely its easier to place a sponge near the hole and mop up the half pint or so of water that comes in!

A few years back Stowe came out with a hull fitting that closed it self as the log was removed. Not to sure on how good it was but it would restrict the flow of water in whilst getting the blanking plug in place.

I think its easier to find a piece of rock then run aground at high water. This should leave plenty of time for cleaning the log and scraping the odd barnacle. Well - it seems easier than trying to work out whether the 'fother sail' is actually over the loghole - what if you'd done all that nice sewing, fastened it on, removed the log and then find that you've missed the bloody hole?

Yes, a nice sandy beach works for me every time.

BUT .... if you have a

Collision mat / material - you can actually do this !

It is common practice to 'salvage' a holed boat by passing 'roped corners' bin liners under a boat to cover the hole. Water pressure and the ropes holding it in place.

But - yes I agree with you .......

ell, it seems that the American firm Standard Horizon copied that gizmo. because it's what I got on my boat. Very little water comes in hen I pull the paddle wheel out before I get the blocking plug in, giving me ample time to take the paddle wheel off to clean and re-antifoul it with the special anti fopuling for depth sounders.

Re: Next Month in PBO

My article on making a bosuns chair from a disused thong plus a photo test of my anchor roller. This proves conclusivley that an old garden roller gives poor holding compared to an anchor.

I'm also working on a piece called "Play Your Cards Wight" which explores in detail the terms and conditions that surround chandlery discount schemes. I know that this has long troubled and distressed some yachtsmen.

learning curves (or should that be cliff) i was tasked with cleaning the log of lord rank one of the OYC's (now OYTNI) boats when i was 19 so that was ok but i was on the boat by myself so i looked at the bung two o-rings fine as i was pulling the log out it went stiff ok first o-ring at the top of the casing curefully got passed it everything ws going fine then stiff again so 2nd o ring right all i had to do was the last half inch out and but the bung in then when it should have been almost out it went stiff aggain i thought, arrrghh help ive broken the #~$%$^$3 thing, and put to much pressure on my pull it came out i went down into the bilge the water came up (we were just over a meter below the water line) i lost the bung and and with one hand clasped over the hole, water still p$$^%ng in panic madly till i found the bung and a couple more fountains later the job was done, some nice dry clothes cup of tea and a lot of sponging later it all was happy again.

lesson learned
have a shorter sailing season to prevent this problem ocurring
or tell someone else to do it

The latest reymarine also has selfclosing 'leaves that stop 90% of the water coming in - it works reasonably well.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

ooh, i wd be quite intrested in the "acorn into gaffer" story - cos that is a real-life story. I am not utterly disinterested in the sailcloth idea either, tho less so. From a nosey point of view, it mite be more interesting if the "how-to" was turned into a "uh-oh: how not to" story about how someone did this and failed, sinking (or nearly sinking) the boat?

Think its > Ocean Youth Trust Northern Ireland

But then again it could be something completly different !......

<hr width=100% size=1>

your right it Ocean Youth Trust of Northern Ireland it doesn't have the same ring as OYC did but then we change RUC for PSNI as everyone throught NIPS would be wrong (northern ireland police service)
