Hi All,

I currently have my engine out of the boat, so I am going to paint the bilge. I have already done the cleaning - that was fun! - but to be honest, I am shocked at the price of bilge paint. Best part of £20 for 750ml, I will probably need a couple of tins, might aswell do as much of the boat as possible. Has anyone used any alternatives, like a floor paint used in garages or something? Any suggestions, or is it just one of those not worth saving on.

There is a much cheaper, UK made bilge paint sold at boat jumbles by the manufacturer.
I bought some early this year and tried it out over the summer, it's very good. High solids (so covers very well) and low odour.

Unfortunately I can't remember the name! I've just tried a search but can't find it. Will keep looking and will post if I find it.

Speak to Shepherd Marine about Jotun paints. The ones I used would also have been suitable as bilge paints though probably not in your case as not fuel resistant. I'm sure they do others. 5l drums only and A LOT cheaper than some of the yottie stuff.

Floor paint from B&Q: comes in wood or concrete types. I have it in my plywood boat. Excellent coverage, and it is immune to oil (says on the tin).

And no, I don't own B&Q.

Just had a browse on ebay. Found international garage floor paint for £15 for 2.5l inc delivery! The same seller had 5l for £20. Now that seems a bargain, and from what I have just read on another post that I initially missed is that it is the same as danboline? I dont know how true that is, but at £15 for 2.5l i'll give it a go :-)
