Ah, well, you see - what I meant is simply that if you buy a boat, that is too far gone, it will turn you away from boating than if you would buy something more decent.
I have done that. bought cheaply cheap shitboats, thinking "Nice n cheap, only needs some TLC" and then ages later I still haven't had sailed AND I invested all the money I "saved" in the boat anyway. Better buy a 10k boat, than buy a 5k boat and invest 5 months of your time and another 6k in total. Not everything is a deal, some boats just get sold off because they are junk.
The key is knowing what you are taking on. Recognise junk for what it is. There are some very well kept old boats out there. Many have undergone extensive refits such that some old boats are in way better condition than some far younger boats that have been neglected

Yeah, but the usual 300 quid fixer upper is just junk with more issues than what it's worth. Don't waste your time, invest the few extra quid now and go sailing instead of trying to save them and be in the boatyard all summer

Come to Hardway in Portsmouth Harbour. A free slipway, a public pontoon to load up and a free car park with trailer spaces five minutes walk away. The only downside is that the sea's a long way away at low tide

The nearby Sailing Club's bar is also the cheapest beer you'll find for miles.
That's sounds amazing!! Unfortunately it's also 265 miles away, so.....!!

According to a Royce Creasey the aim in maintenance is to replace things before they fail. But only just before!
I had to look Royce Creasy up on the Interweb. I see he was an aircraft fitter, he will know all about preventative maintenance!

As a young spotty lad I worked on a project to computerise the rather complex requirements for aircraft maintenance.

The cost of parts and accessories. As soon as it’s got ‘marine’ written on it the price doubles. Why? I’ve got no idea!
Thank you for your explanation. Which parts do you mean in particular if I may ask? Or just all the parts all together? :)

The OPbot has not been seen here since leaving that post three days ago.
No bot here, just a busy human that had to finish off some projects at work ;)
But thank you for your all replys and the insights you gave me, still reading through all of this and taking notes

Why do you think that is trolling? As I explained just before, I do have some other obligations to take care of as well.
I don't see that there is anything with bad intentions posted. I'm just at the very beginning of this journey and instead of reading trough article over article which are most of the time sponsored from people having an agenda I thought I would ask here and get the advice and experience from people at the front of it.

People don’t have to comment on threads. Perfectly normal topic and if it drifts so be it. I am a believer in unless you have something reasonable to say don’t bother. It’s an insult useing the word Troll.

Honestly, everything.

Anything stainless steel, sealant, grease, rope, clothing, engine parts even crockery.

This is where this website is invaluable, lots of people on here know people and places that can save you a fortune!

He was also a contributor to several Motorcycle Magazines.

A very rounded character, wrote good stuff.

Like many things in life boating is vulnerable to stupidity and there's simply no cure or legislation for that! Have some good pals on RNLI crews and whilst regularly in awe of what they selflessly do, am equally frustrated for them and the situations they face when idiots and boats meet....
