OK we all know we get ripped off as boat owners from time to time, but even the chandlery apologised for this one...

Yup that's £51.20 for some toilet seat hinges

Those don't look significantly different from their shoreside equivalents. Probably a fiver in B&Q or Wickes.

Hi, is this a wind up ? several bits of plastic £51.20 perhaps they marked the packet incorrectly, if not I would tell them to shove it where the sun dont shine, as posted these are not very different to standard toilet fittings
did you hand over that amount of money ! the mind boggles!

Thanks for all the votes of support

Some times its just easier to bite the bullet....
£15 return to B&Q in fuel.
£5 more to visit one or 2 others...
£5-10 for the spares
An hours drive there, and an hours drive back, plus time looking and fitting...

Against delivered to shop collect on way to boat, fitted and working in 5 minutes...

I had just got a good price on some other gear, I do not think the chandlery made to much on them, either way they where apologetic you win some  you loose some ...

Compared to the bill i got from DRB marine I put them down as good value. £1350 for 2 months storage, a lift onto a lorry for boat and mast together with some very average woodwork to support the mast lying on the boat was a bit of a shocker.

They don't look to be highly engineered, but I understand that the dimensions of the seat, lid and seal on a Lavac are fairly critical. I doubt that a random hinge bought at B&Q would have done the job. Doesn't excuse the price but maybe explains it to some extent. Interesting that none of the spares kits listed by Piplers include the hinges, although they do include the seal around the vertical screwed part.

I completely understand. If you own a boat berthed in a Solent marina and have a full time job, then work out how much each day's sailing costs you a year.

You will realise that EVERY second counts!...or you will sell your boat.

Either way, DO NOT tell your wife!
