We have been mulling over the idea of getting a bigger boat again, even bigger than our last boat, to be able to spend up to about a week onboard and travel further afield.. Obviously the old issues come up of the high prices of moorings along the south coast and maintenance etc.. It then occurred to me that instead of an extra few £k in mooring fees an alternative might be to keep the small boat and take that few £k and charter a boat for a week in the summer..

There are of course pro's and con's to this.. Pro's are that we don't have the costs associated with a big boat and can vary the cruising ground each year.. Con's are we don't have the boat available anytime we feel like a short or long cruise..

Has anyone here put this theory into practice and had a small boat at home and chartered a bigger boat for "holiday" cruises?

Anyone else have any thoughts on this strategy?

Not quite but almost. We have had a small sea boat and chartered à big boat for inland waters. But this is the old chestnut, but I prefer the heart to rule the head. There is no logical sense to own a boat (without the use of man maths etc) let alone a bigger one. It's just more money and more problems, but I like to turn the problems in to virtues. For example by sharing the problems on this forum we can all get enjoyment out of it. Sorry it's no to chartering in your local waters, if you have that big boat itch then it must be scratched.
