Big y insurance increase

Topsail are brokers so they offer insurance from different sources which might suit you better.
Taking reasonable care is an underlying assumption with any insurance. At least you have a definition of what reasonable care means As said similar applies if leaving a house empty .
I suggest you phone Topsail to discuss options or search other sources and see what Topsail can do. I know Topsail deal with Haven KJ / MS Amlin and N&G.

This was posted on our marina forum this morning.

It seems it comes from a member of the CA.

THIS FROM A CA MEMBER New Clause in Boat Insurance.

Our boat, like many others, has been out of the water in Greece for 18 months and is likely to remain so for another year. Our insurance renewal from Topsail this year has this new clause.

"Topsail Insurance Yacht and Motorboat PDS and Policy Wording Version 1 dated January, 2021 here UNATTENDED VESSEL
If Your Vessel is left unattended for any consecutive period in excess of 30 days then the following condition will apply: Following 30 consecutive days of non-attendance at your vessel you must make arrangements to have your vessel checked at
least every 30 days thereafter by a responsible person who is familiar with your vessel and the check confirmed to You.
Checking the vessel shall include:
a) Confirming that the batteries are remaining charged by either shore power and or by other renewable means
b) That the bilges are free from excess water and that the bilge pump is active and operational
c) That cockpit drains and ondeck drainage channels remain clear
d) That a visual inspection of the boat shows no signs of internal or external damage and that all covers where applicable are secure and intact.
e) That the means of mooring and or lay-up remains secure and adequate.
Confirmation of the check shall mean:
Providing to You such written communication that may be used as future evidence in the event of a claim that the vessel has been checked in accordance with this condition.
Definitions:
Unattended and Non-attendance shall mean You not being physically present on board the vessel.

This plus a 20% increase in premium has left us wondering what to do next! Find another insurer? Or are they all putting this clause in now?
It‘s all good sense. In his case he is on the hard, but even there people get into problems with neglect. A water leak can flood the boat with rain water for example. A regular check is essential.

@Scala and @DavidJ
Thanks for that.
It is probably something special about this guy in the CA - maybe out of the water but also maybe Greece.
I plan to start my negotiations early in April.
I've found them very helpful. Dealt with Laura. Unless I missed some weasel words buried somewhere :) always possible, the new policy seems if anything slightly better than the ex-Y one, so far so good.

Go the renewal e-mail from Topsail (Previously Y) a while back.

Not only is the premium up a considerable jump, but the underwriters (Hastings) are insisting on the 'Replace with similar vessel' clause.

In fairness, Claire (who moved to Topsail from Y) is doing her best, but the above clause is a non runner. Good luck finding a 37ft sports cruiser in same condition, coded for chartered skipper (in Ireland) and fresh water use.

Glad the forum brought the above clause to my attention, I would have just renewed without thinking twice only for the forum brought it to my attention.

Y are now just a broker. I was given a navigators and general policy. See if they can quote you on that
Many thanks.

I have asked Claire several times about removing the 'replace with a similar vessal' clause and she keeps referring back to Hastings. Once I hear back, I'll ask abou tthe N&G policy... surely she would have looked that up?

Anyway, have contacted GJW to see if they'll cover Republic of Ireland.

Thanks for the help, folks.

I have e-mailed Topsail asking them about N&G as possible under-writers. I have also emailed various other brokers etc. as I feel the need to shop around this year. I've been with Y for years now and of course it's convenient to just renew, but not when you're not getting like-for-like on the previous years, with a premium hike to boot.

Many thanks.

GJW used to have that clause a few years ago but no idea if it still there, do check. At the time I did get GJW to agree not to replace with a similar boat.

Their standard policy does indeed have that clause. I'm waiting on a response if they'll cover Republic of Ireland. If they will, i'll send them full details / requests.

TBH i'm just after a fairly standard policy, with the 'agreed value' clause and also day skippered charter. We just run the boat as skippered charter for a bit of fun and have a handful (well, none last year) of charters per year. The charter isin't an issue at all, it's the 'agreed value' clause.

To be honest, without reading these forums, i'd never even have looked up that clause. If I had a bog-standard RIB or similar I wouldn't mind, but the boat is in excellent condition (of course i'd say that), many upgrades, fresh water (with the exception of 1 year) and coded for skippered charter in Ireland (not an easy feat which cost several thousand Euro).

My turn now, just received my Y / Topsail renewal quote... Over 50% increase since last year. This would be my 3rd renewal and equates to 300% higher than my initial premium. Something stinks.

It does seem necessary to shop around and not simply accept the renewal that is first offered . Topsail were keen to discount by 10% the lowest price I had found for a satisfactory insurance that is well suited to my needs .
