Must say four hours of this was hard going. this was a delivery last year trying to get a Princess to it's ship for transport. " Last ship for 4 months" I recon that we were getting the occaisional waves which were in excess of 10m. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif this was Bay of Lions and when we left it was an f2. We managed to get from Andrax to Genova Itlay only damage a broken VHF arial not bad going. anybody got any more scary pics to share.

Funny thing was my mate who was driving whilst I took this had a Mars bar in his mouth that just melted down his face as he froze to the wheel for about an hour. Laughing at him diverted my fear. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif [image]

Nearly no one takes pictures in the bad stuff. Can remember once, when 3ft of green water sat on the deck for ages. Other times when the sea was far higher than the fly bridge. But it's hardly like. Go get the camera time. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Wow!.... 33 foot wave, was that in the Med? There must have been a lot of wind that day. Is the place very effected by tide?

I must admit, I'm with Hayden, you won't catch me behind the camera in extreme conditions. I can only barely manage to stand up, even in 5 metres. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

that could just be a piccie of someone out of sight throwing a bucket of water over the bloomin screen and that looks like a mountain in the distance to the right, good try Gskip :~)

Would agree ... no time to take pictures during, as all onboard should hold on to whatever....but in retrospect wish I had a way of taking pictures to objectively review what the conditions really was like.....

Pictures after the event is more common /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Think you intended to reply to Sun_Coast's somewhat cheeky comment /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ..., not me ....

perhaps a couple of new wiper rubbers would help visibility at least ???!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yup ... ours.... Was not pleasant to be out there ... wind against tide in the North Sea can be nasty when caught out... but circumstances and all that ... ended up with a £10K insurance repair as Radar etc. was a write off..... crew (family) was brilliant and we all live to tell the tales, so all well really..

On posts like this, I always put this pic up

But here's a video taken during our run down to the Med last year. You can see from the plotter that we had passed Cape Vincent a few hours earlier - I'd been below asleep and woke to find that I had missed some big waves breaking over the flybridge - This clip was taken after the big waves - note the distorted starboard wiper which needed realigning later.

Oh yes and while I'm on the subject of video clips this one shows Europe to port and Africa to starboard - YOUR CHALLENGE SIR!!!

Mike, you must be a very good sleeper to miss waves that big. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
When we are underway, I find the aft saloon lounge near the patio door the best for least movement, for crew rotational sleeping.

The last video, was that the Straits of Gibalter? Is there much tidal movement through this section of water.

Great photos and clips, thanks.

Alf, when you mentioned you were in the North Sea making passage, the T.V. show, 'Trawlermen' is airing over here at the moment, so I can relate to what you are saying. There are some pretty hardy soles working those fishing boats in your end of the world.

Impressive stuff Hurricane. Especialy nipping of for a kip /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gifand missing the action. Jenny Wren seems to be prooving a good boat and my pic is a boat from the same stable and about 9 years old . Picked the boat up in Andrax Mallorca which had not run for at least a year, it ran all the way to Italy all we did was a good engine check new filters and impellors etc and shuved a diver under her with a scraper for a couple of hours. Boat then ran virtualy non stop to Italy then on a ship to far east. I belive that it then ran a further 600 miles to its final destination, no probs. I for one have a lot of faith in how boats like Jenny Wren and the much older 65 I was delivering. Princess seem to put them together well. they all seem to behave well.

Anyway back to our challenge Sir. I fly off in a few hours and I recon somebody may owe me a pint around 30th May /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I recon I will be seeing camels of my starboard bow very soon. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

... Jimmy have become sort of a "local hero" in our habrour of Peterhead ... even have an event at Christmas when they turn on the Christmas lights on his boat... half the township turns up... Work har and I guess play hard those guys and some great chat on the VHF as they leave and arrive in the harbour.... some find the dialect a bit challenging, but you quicly get used to it...

Alf

Are you based at Peterhead? Is that Jimmy on "Amity" or "Ocean Venture"? They have to sub-title the show over here, but very popular. Imagine being down below, cleaning the fish for hours, rolling from side to side.

Yup ... based in Peterhead Marina, which is on the South West end of the bay after the breakwater ... and it is Jimmy Buchan onboard "Amity" who I believe have done the best out of the series...I am sure that being down below is tough, but at least it rolls less down there ... worse being out on deck handling the nets etc., when it is at its toughest ...
