I have narrowed it down to two boats one is a 2001 Beneteau Antares 1080 with twin 260hp volvos 1100hrs use, other is a 2006 Merry Fisher 925 with single volvo 260hp volvo d4 50hrs use. Both are in budget however the age of the Beneteau worries me whereas the seakeeping of the merry fisher is my main concern if you had this choice to make which would it be and why.....

Hmmm, in helping you spend your money I was going to say that I like the Antares 1080. Personally, I'd go for twin screw rather than single if everything else was equal.

I don't think I've ever seen a Merry Fisher 925 in the flesh - I am impressed with the smaller models tho' and looking at pictures the 925 looks a cracking boat.

So there we are, not much help.

Why are you worried about the age of the Beneteau? If it's been well looked after age shouldn't be much of an issue.

And do you prefer the idea of twin engines or the economy and simplicity of a single. I'd make a check list of your priorites and see which one comes out on top.

Not sure you have made any choice at all. They are two completly different boats.

Decide what the boat is going to be used for. Then as you get used to it, your going to want more, or give up altogether. Folk who stick with boating tend to keep going bigger, if they can afford to.

You'll have alot more fun with the twin though and it looks more capable. The engine hours are about half mine, so not a big worry..

An extra 4' or so of hull and twin donks makes for a much more capable boat, IMHO. Sod the age. As the Antares is 2001 with 260hp volvos, I assume they're KAMD44's, so not the world's most economical lumps, but as long as they're serviced they're fine. The Merry Fisher will be a lot cheaper to run, but the Beneteau strikes me as a 'proper' boat.

Totally different boats.

The BtO is verging on a luxury flybridge whereas the 925, whilst excellent at what it does is in a different class.

The BtO should be a super boat, but at her age could be starting to have all sorts of problems.

If looking at an older BtO then also look at the likes of the Rodman range or a Prestige 32 and so on.

Not sure you are there yet in your decision making process to say you've narrowed it down... the boats are worlds apart.

KAMD44's/300's are great engines, BUT do make sure they have had their tappets adjusted every 200 hours. If in doubt, get them done - it's important!
