Beyond the RYA Diesel Course

Not RYA certified but worked long enough in the diesel and petrol engine area to offer you any tuition you need, for a nominal fee of course, /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif, and on your own boat if you want.

Did the AEC Course (MCA) down at the UK Sailing Academy as I wanted more confidence in the bigger jobs that may occur on a extended cruise. Found the course a bit scrambled but the guy (forgotten his name) was very experienced and didn't mind lots of questions. You get to strip engines down and rebuild them.

Personally I found the theory sessions unstructured and jumped around a bit too much - a lack of clarity and consistency in the direction and level of these sessions. Practical hands on sessions were really useful for me and gave a chance to pull engines to bits with no consequence with knowledgable support. I've never really been a classroom sort so could have just been me.

The guy running the course was very helpful and knew engines after alot of years in the industry, but not a natural classroom teacher. Much prefer this though as could answer any question with a story and a puff of his pipe.

Hope this helps.
