Looking for best price on supply only of new Beta 3 cylinder engine for a new boat I am looking at. Can anyone recommend a good dealer?
 
I bought my Beta 25 at the time of the 2012 SIBS. Telephone deal direct with Beta. Dealer wouldn't match the price I was offered.
Delivery to the boatyard and fitted by myself.

I agree with earlybird,s thoughts, but I ordered away from the boatshow.

The line I took was:

" I guess you prefer to get orders throughout the year rather than at the boatshow. What is your best price? I don't want to find I have been turned over and someone in the yard gets a better deal than me - if we can agree this right now, I will put cheque deposit in the post for £2000 this morning"

Not so crass but that sort of approach. You know, giving the guy a reason to give you his best deal. It was fine they are good people to deal with. Make sure you know the exact spec you want and do your homework ...as you are doing now.

I've bought two engines direct from Beta and agree entirely with doug's comments. Indeed, one of several reasons for choosing Beta is the sheer 'speccability' of their engines. Most come standard with a polyvee belt these days, but if your model doesn't, I'd urge you seriously to consider the upgrade. Many other options...bigger alternator, high-rise exhaust, calorifier take-off, etc, etc...are available. Their 'special feet' service is also good news, allowing a Beta to slot straight into a gap previously occupied by something else at a great deal less cost and bother than building new bearers.

No connection, etc.

Beta are now fitting an extra wide standard V belt to their engines, 14mm from memory. I was prepared to upgrade to a ribbed belt but Beta themselves said don't bother as the V belt is now just as good.
 
Bought our Beta 25 from TS Marine, who also supplied various other bits, and did the basic fitting. I don't know the precise relationship between Beta and TS Marine, but Scott who runs TS is often seen at boat shows on the Beta stand. When I arrived at the stand to discuss a new engine, I was handed on to Scott once the location of our boat was established.

Very happy with the service provided by TS, and the Beta engine.
 
I was going to go with a Beta as i couldnt afford the Yanmar prices even at theSIBS boat show, however very pleased with the price of a Yanmar at the LIBS so went with them. Give them a go - French Marine

I daresay it's better, but would be very surprised if it's "just as good". If it were they'd be widespread on cars, when in fact they're pretty much nonexistant.

I may well be entirely wrong, but I would hazard a guess that the standard belts on cars are specced for the relatively light alternator load required, compared with what you would find on a boat with its much higher demand for electricity.

OK, but generally the belts on boat engines aren't also driving power steering pumps and air conditioning compressors.

All the small Beta seagoing engines (10-45) have a polyvee drive as standard.

have you thought of Nanni believe they use the Kubota block the same as Beta... mine came with the boat and was supplied by AR Peachment, had to contact them about a couple of queries and they were very helpful if its any help.

I can only comment on the situation in October 2015 and at that time the polyvee belt was a £107+VAT option on the Beta43.

I went to SIBS 10yrs ago to research engines, looked at Beta, Nanni, Vetus, Yanmar etc. Discounted Yanmar and Vetus as you have to accept their engine as is - no mods available. The Yanmars water pump was difficult to access.. I went with Beta for their 25hp engine with upgraded alternator(with polyvee belt), feet to fit my bearers, spares kit, and an excellent price. I fitted myself, had the installation checked by local Beta engineer to get the warranty. Very pleased, good service from Beta. Recommended.
 
I went with a beta 14 direct and was happy. Nice factory tour and a bit of a run through of the engine thrown in.

I project managed a fairly complex install with everything replaced from seacocks to shaft and prop . Beta asked Scott at TS to check it over for warranty, which I thourght was both generous of him and gave piece of mind. I tend to buy my spares from him.

The Citroën DS engine drives a hydraulic pump which needs about 4hp through two standard narrow vee belts. I think that's fairly near the limit.
