Just winterised the engine and checked the anode - it had entirely disappeared! It was apparently only 'glued' into the brass plug! Replaced it with the one from the spares pack(also 'glued' in) but has anyone else had this problem? - the engine was only fitted this year. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Yes, with a 13.5.

Thought it had just 'fallen off', but on taking the heat exchanger apart there was no 'bit' sitting in it, so either it had got so small as to have been washed away, or it had done what it was supposed to, only faster than expected.

Think I might do it twice a year rather than once.

Thanks for the replies, there was no evidence of it wasting away, but it looked as if the anode had been glued in position and had fallen out - bearing in mind that is operating in hot water at 80-90ºC.
However I have sent a letter to Beta and I will await their reply with interest and post it on here.

When I bought Rowana last year, one of my fairly early jobs was to check the anode. (Beta 13.5hp)

It was about half gone, so I fitted a new one anyway. No idea how long it had been in there, and I will have a look again once I start my maintenance routine.

re my beta 20hp new anode fitted oct 2006, just completed engine service and was surprised to find no trace of old anode just the brass end cap, i also would have expected to find even a small trace attached to the end cap. i will remove in 3 months to check wear assuming it hasnt disappeared!

Wasting rate seems about right. Mine is half gone after a 5 month season. So longer than that would expect it all to go, including the bit "stuck" in the cap. Remember it is not subject to hot circulating water, only the raw sea, running only luke warm at most. Think it is all simply being wasted - as it should.

I've run a Beta 20hp for the last 3yrs. After 300hrs use the anode has gone: after 200 there has been a stub or banana left. I now expect to change at no more than 250hrs. An engine-hrs meter is v. useful; not just for anodes.

My 28 1005 Beta uses one anode a season. Although it's an expense it's better than having the engine waste away! This year, when I've not used the boat that much some of the anoder was left, but not last year or the previous one when I did about 300 hrs a season. Easy to replace though.

My new 20hp job arrived this morning, so I have just read the manual right through. The maintenance schedule says replacement may be necessary every 6 months, or less; "in certain environments" Brian

(Beta 28) I find wasteage rate to be unpredictable. In some years I changed each season, as badly wasted. This year, surprised to find in good nick after 18mths (I lost 6 mths due to medical probs).
