Best wishes to Colvic Watson who heading South from Southwold today got hit by a big wave resulting in fall on the foredeck, bashing his head and what looked like a very, very painful shoulder injury.
Congrats to Mrs Colvic Watson for holding it all together so calmly and getting Mr, Kids and Dog back to safety with the help of the Southwold Inshore LB.

Get better soon.

If you are going to have a fall, then a CW foredeck is very protected place.

Best wishes for speedy recovery.

Sorry to hear this CW.

I broke my left clavicle a few weeks ago (albeit on dry land though), so I know just how painful injuries in that part of the anatomy can be.

Here's hoping it's something that's soon mended.

Sounds like you've got a very competent shipmate.

Thank you everyone, it was a bit of a shocker:

We'd tied down the hanked on Genoa and it started to work loose, Mrs and I went forward to sort it, kneeling on the deck and taking our time working with one hand each - it was a bit wild up there. We'd just finished when I looked up and saw that we were about the fall off the top of a rather big wave, the ride down that one was bad, but it was the next one that got us - I'm no lightweight but it threw me up in the air like a rag doll.

At the top I grabbed something with my left hand and held on, my body dropped to the deck with my hand up there and pulled the arm straight out of its socket. Somewhere along the way I bashed my head into something. I got about 5 seconds of adrenaline to gather myself then I collapsed to the deck. Mrs CW came over and I just said "it's a Mayday". From then on for the next 90 minutes I was a passenger. I lay there on the deck unable to move, unbelievable pain, I could hear her, bless her, literally shouting the mayday, I remember thinking "use the red button" but she told me later she thought that was only for when you're sinking or on fire :)

Then my 16 year old appeared and for the next hour and a half never left my side, she was soaked through with spray - we don't use oilies on a CW :D after about 20 minutes I realised I was going into shock, each roll sent my arm one way and my body the other, she kept me warm with blankets and sang my favourite blues songs to me. God I love that girl. The lifeboat guys arrived and worked on keeping my conscious, I could hear this person shouting and screaming for a while before I realised it was me.

They got us back, meanwhile Harbour Marine Services had organised the ambulance and coastguard team for the arrival, the paramedics brought Entonox and explained I was going to have to stand up xxxxxxx xxxx xxxxxxx may have been my response. The big guys from the LB got me up and to the ambulance, eldest daughter with me, Mrs CW looking after the 9&5 year olds.

The pain was unbelievable, each jolt was like being kicked and I'm told I shouted that if the driver didn't slow down I would "buy a gun and hunt him down" and then apparently I immediately apologised whilst the paramedics laughed their heads off.

Another team met us half way and poured some morphine into me to shut up the shouty patient I reckon. 30 minutes later I was X rayed, full of some very exotic drugs and an awesome German Doc gently pops the shoulder back. Instant relief. (how do you feel about voting Leave now Says Mrs CW later).

I'm back on board - a lot closer than home! And waiting for my 7 o'clock meds; now the shoulder is merely very painful I'm noticing all the other bruises!

Mrs CW and daughters deserve medals, they were a perfect team, the Lifeboat guys were just superb and Javelin at HMS - thanks mate for everything you did.

Next time? I'll set off a day later and when something needs doing I'll turn the xxxxxxx boat round and do it with the wind.

Outpatients on Monday then we set off again with me strapped up and allowed to do the navigating but not touch a rope for a few weeks, Mrs CW won't let me.

Well, that just shows how quickly things can go wrong! Glad everything turned out alright in the end but what a horrible experience. Hope you are soon fit and well:)

+1
And well done your wife and daughter.

Your experience sort of makes me doubt the wisdom of my preference/enjoyment for single-handing.......................................

Sorry to hear of your misfortune CW, hope you are on the mend.

I must not let my wife see this post as I have spent two years convincing her the Colvic Watson is safe as houses!!! I have almost convinced her, to the extent she helmed up the river last weekend, this could set her back months.

Enjoy your cruise, will we still get a video of it this year?

Steve

Good to hear all that from the horse's mouth. So often we're only left with conjecture and guesswork which makes it very hard to learn from other's experiences.
Well done all

A terrific account of what was clearly a horrible incident. Heart-warming to read your description of how everyone rallied round to look after you. Hope you're back on form before too long.

I hope you won't think a little hilarity is in bad taste!

Patient in A&E screaming and shouting with a dislocated shoulder.

Nurse come in and says "stop making such a fuss - we have women giving birth who are making less noise"

"yes" says the patient "but you are not trying to push them back in"

Get well soon!

Sorry to hear your nasty experience, its times like this you reflect thanks in supporting the RNLI.

Hope you are soon on the mend, huge respect to SWMBO an kids for taking over :encouragement:

Thanks everyone, I've got full feeling to the shoulder now and beginning to be able to move it in the sling - we'll know more when we see the orthopods tomorrow. And whoever left the litre bottle of brandy on the boat for us today is a real gentleman.

A 12% diminution in sympathy from Mrs CW and eldest daughter already, I shouldn't have shown them what I wrote about how brilliant they were, it'll be all ironic comments about Nelson soon. I may have to have a relapse...
