Best way to find speed of tide when stationary

You are dossing in the cockpit when anchored and decide to find out the speed of the tide.
Do you...........

(a) Good enough to guess.
(b) Finally get up watch flotsum and guess
(c) Go to the bow, spit and then time and distance.
(d) Have a super sensitive log that will enable you not to leave the cockpit
(e) Ask a likely looking local passing by
(f) Find the nearest diamond and estimate
(g) None of these things. I'm not bothered
(h) Waiting for the latest gizmo from NASA to do it.
(g) + a cold tinny

Not sure i understand .
Why do you want to know the speed of the tide?
Do you mean
  1. tidal stream as some have suggested or
  2. rate of vertical rise/fall in mm/min?
If the second then a log- super sensitive or otherwise wont help.
if the first then why "super sensitive" ? Normal log will tell you to within 0.1 knots.

Its easy where i live. At springs the tidal stream in the channel can be up to 8 knots.
I can motor at 6.5 knots so if i am motoring against the tide and GPS speed is 1 knot and i am going backwards with respect to shore marks, then i know the tidal stream is 7.5 knots!

We had similar off Sand Point having mucked up passage from Cardiff to Uphill. Boat, a non-slippery underpowered MacWester would do indicated 5kts. We were virtually stationary for 45 minutes a few cable length off caravan park and beach huts. Tide was thus 5kts.
