Laser 1 sail has light rust marks and some other dirty points. Any recommendations appreciated.

Be gentle, avoid bleach at all costs as it'll knobble the sail !
I think warm soapy water then a rinse is all I'd use, stains like rust marks may be made fainter but unless someone knows different they just have to be lived with.

My lady sailmaker suggested some hippy appliques over the rust marks, cos that was the best bet. Or just ignore them

If it's old enough to be grubby, then it's probably time to think about a new(er) one?
I don't think Persil or whatever will harm polyester, but it won't get rust out either.

Have some rust stains on mine as well, where the foot of the sail lay on rusty anchor chain - had the (probably mad idea) of soaking in a phosphoric acid solution as in rust convertor, anyone tried this, or will it damage the material?

The usual method for removing the rust stains is to make up solution of oxalic acid,then lay the sail so that the fabric/stain is immersed in the dish or plate.Allow to soak then rinse when stain has been reduced or shifted satisfactorily. Oxalic acid is poisonous so use protective gloves using it. You can get a good price/quantity rather than the local chemist, on Ebay. Yachties use this chemical and mix with Polycell to clean up rust-stained GRP hulls.
