Thanks guys for the info. Very useful indeed. I may just pop down to Southampton this weekend look and judge the boats myself.

After collecting the info in this thread so far, I most certainly will eliminate the Nelson an look for something more comfortable such as the Princess etc.

Thanks
Charles

Re: moonraker - therapy needed

It's funny how they've stuck in people's minds. I must be roughly of an age with you and I remember a couple of my mates being completely besotted with them and cutting out pix etc. - so you are not alone. Even then, I was a smart-alec know-it-all and drooled over Faireys, Bertrams, Sonny Levi designs and the like, though I concede that the Moonraker looked - and looks - the part.

I think the best therapy to get you over your fixation is to go out in a Moonraker in a blow and turn downwind, whilst trying to fix the windows /forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

It's also worth pointing out that planing hulls provide more speed. This might seem obvious, but what it does is allow you to plan trips around relatively small weather windows, departing and arriving in good conditions. A semi displacement boat, which adds several hours to the journey time, could see you still out there as rougher weather rolls in.

We had a 1997 aft cabin Nimbus 31' (sold last year) single shaft which would be close to your top price. Very seaworthy and single 200hp engine economical to service and run. Cruise 14-18 kts and 22-24 kts top speed so not the turn of speed of modern planing boats but probably not too far off older models. Accommodation 5 berths + cockpit.

Not sure the Boat show is the best venue if 50K is the budget, go to an online broker and go look at some s/h boats and remember the decent ones sell quickly

...also worth having a look around the several second hand boat shows that go on at the same time as Southampton; i.e. Moody and Deacons at Swanwick, Berthon and Ancasta at Lymington and others too numerous to mention at Hamble Point. You'll see all sorts there and it should give you some idea of the sheer diversity of what's on offer. But hurry; this weekend is your last chance............
