I mixed a very small amount of polyester resin and presumably added too much or too little as it has not gone hard. What is best to clean up unhardened resin?

Yes on both counts, except that the OP doesn't describe the substrate: acetone can be damaging to many plastics.
Additionally, soft resin doesn't dissolve all that readily, so best to remove as much as you can by mechanical means before resorting to solvent.

Thanks I though Acetone might be best - how to make away with wife's nail varnish remover now...

Do read the label. Some aren't acetone (although they're still solvents so might work).
Take care to clean and dry the area thoroughly after using acetone to avoid any risk of solvent entrapment. Acetone is miscible in water, so that's good for the final clean.
