Best small boat for the med?

Think you are in for a surprise if you think we don·nt get rough weather in the Med.
100 kph is quite normal most weeks, with seas nothing like those round the UK coast,

Take a look at Med: designed motor boats, or fishing boats, they are both for motoring in seas that come at you from different directions at the same time, plus they are short and steep.

Then add wind that changes speed within minutes and miles etc etc,
so do a bit of research and be safer,,,,,

just offering you some food for thought,

good luck

Yep, I'm in Port Vauban right now and it is blowing pretty hard, the sea is up, and the coast road is closed because of storm debris. But I don't think anyone's labouring under the impression that the weather is always perfect here; but it is definitely the case that the boating season is longer and more consistent here than it is in the UK.

Cheers

Well, Iago le constructeur*, if it wasn't for the fact that I love being able to pop down to the boat on a moment's notice and so it suits me to be based in the Solent I would be heading for Port Vauban quicker than a neutrino in the lab at Cern. I think it's a fab location. We have a house about an hour away and I always enjoy going to Antibes and especially having a look at the boats in PV.

I just read what I've written and realise that it is no use at all. Still, never mind.

Here's a vid taken from the beach beside entrance to Port Vauban, 2 days ago, Nov 5th

You know that house that is built within the breakwater of Cap D'Ail marina? (over by Monaco, for those not familiar). A friend in MC has just emailed to say the waves have been breaking over the breakwater, trashing two cars in the process, and now one of the windows in that house has busted allowing a huge amount of sea inside.

All that said, this coming weekend's forecast looks good!

Surprised at your GJuan comment --- always seems much more popular with the French than PV ... and currently seems to be commanding higher prices in my opinion.

I agree that asking prices in G Juan seem higher than Antibes, AOTBE, and I can't explain that becuase it's obvious that Antibes is nicer.

I have owned a berth in G Juan though, plus 2 in antibes, so I'm familiar with the papers/legals. In Antibes you own (to use Uk analogies) the stub of a 50 year lease. When it expires you own nothing. Nada. Zippo. You might be morally at the front of the queue to rent your berth, i suppose, if the freeholders behave nicely

In GJuan you own shares in the marina operating company, which in turn has the 50 yr lease, and your shares give you the right to park your boat in a specific berth. When the lease expires, you still own the shares, admittedly in a company whose lease just ended. Some people might think that puts you in a slightly stronger position. You have to use some imagination to see why its a stronger position, but its just about plausible. That might very l
slightly explain the pricing delta, though I don't get it and would pay a premium for antibes not the other way around

Jimmy. You were kind enough to offer to let me measure the floor of your targa so a contribution to this debate!

Our targa 40 is in la rochelle. I have taken this boat and the last one down there 5 times and it is a nice week trip. It is 1 hour by plane or half a day by ferry and car if you have bits.

The cruising is fantastic, lots of islands etc the berth cost euro 3200 per annum Inc water and unlimited power. It is only some 120 miles north of the med and we head down to Spain most summers - only 6 hours.

Thesummer weather is almost universally great until about October. I have generator and air. We do use the air alot ( but my house has full ac so I like it). But you can get away without it.

Looking at the astonishing prices being quoted take a look. Oh and oysters are euro 2 a dozen

Hi J

How's the new floor - did you manage to get organised in the end?

Thanks for this - that's an interesting option, although we're keen on this corner of France for a number of reasons - principally that we've got other forumite chums that are here, I'm down here for work from time to time anyway, and it's similarly easy to get to (admittedly a longer flight, but not too much). Mind you, the oysters... very nice.

Cheers

La Rague is same as CR I believe ... ( and I thought GJ "Old Port" was the same structure as CR but that may be imaginative thinking). There can be no practical difference in the schemes can there ? ... x% of naff all is still naff all! Only difference is a legal structure in between which has no more teeth than the sum of the parts and could actually be seen as weaker for the same reason? Wind up the operating company (as it can only incur debt not income) and re-employ the staff the next day .. am I being dim again?

PS -- Nick -- rental prices (monthly ) are less than 1/2 in La Rague during winter v summer ... but the sum of the 6 summer months is > than the annual rate. assumed that was similar for them all inc Antibes.
