i know there was a thread on data recently, but all the deals seem to tie you in to a 2 year contract. :(

Anyone found a good deal for an all you can eat pay as you go data sim , to run either in a dongle or phone set as access point. On 3 at the mo but 25 quid for 7 gig/month and V slow.

Ta V much

Giff Gaff

I use Giff Gaff

£12/ month for genuinely unlimited internet. I use it as my main connection and stream iplayer youtube etc for an hour a day on average. You also get 250mins calls and unlimited texts for that.

Or you could pay £10 a month and get 1Gb a month, 250mins calls & unlimited texts.

They keep it cheap by handling the support online. I have never had a problem with the service. They also do no marketing except word of mouth and referalls, again this keeps the costs down.

Disclosure: If you order a sim I would get a fiver :)

It's a genuinely good service though IMHO

I use 3 and pay about £12 on eBay for 3 gig over 3 months, good and fast also good coverage around the coast.

I have my own i4 apple, and I use 3, for £12.60 per month get 5000 mins plus similar to other 3 users, to other nets and landlines in UK, unlimited texts and more internet than I use. max 2 hours a day

+1. And the good thing is that you can change the package at will. Plus it's carried by O2 so you get a decent signal in most places. Been using it for 18 months and find it very good

As I interpret their website info, the '£12 / UNLIMITED internet' only applies when using internet on a phone. It does not apply when using as a 'data modem' to connect to a computer. That's why they offer a 'gigabag' at £12.50 for 3Gb data .... comparable in cost to other providers.

(ok, SOME phones on SOME networks may function as data modems without the provider realising - but not guaranteed).

That seems to be the way, looks like they don't like you tethering. But seems best of the bunch and free sim without getting tied into a long contract. Don't think I could handle another winter this far north..

Could be a fiver coming your way, Sam :)

On the unlimited Giffgaff tariffs, you cannot tether the phone to use it as an access point, but the data is truly unlimited on the phone itself.

They do do marketing - they sponsor The Big Bang Theory

I think they are cheap because it probably doesn't actually cost much to supply mobile services - the others are all more expensive because they can get away with it. When I see the O2 ad for their PAYG service that keeps giving you more, I can't believe that people fall for it..... But they obviously do.

From a recent thread, I think Giffgaff are a subsidiary of O2, and are ultimately owned in Spain. They fulfil a niche need and couch it with fluffiness.

Tethering is not allowed on the unlimited data packages but is allowed on the 1gb £10 goodybag.

I assure you that you _can_. Reading the thread it now seems like you are not supposed to. But it does work.

I am typing this on a laptop connected to a tethered Android phone on Giff Gaff.

Something like this would probably make it work: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lite.up.wifitether.free.update&hl=en
