Hi all,
My engine is out at the moment. The engine feet are looking very rusty, in addition the engine itself would probably benefit from a clean-up and paint.

Does anyone have any advice on the best paint for the feet, and the best paint for the engine please?

Best wishes,
Trev

Go to a large plant hire firm & see what the yellow paint is that they use to paint dumpers etc with. Basically an industrial machinery paint.
I used to use it on my digger, dumpers, hoists & mixers but forget what one it was. ( retirement got in the way!!) Fairly cheap , thick , oil proof & easy to apply quick drying. Would brighten up the engine bay as well

Just checked Hammerite website.... should I use the "standard" metal paint or the "no1 rust beater"? Do these stand up to the engine heat (ok an inboard doesn't get that hot...)
Cheers,
Trev

Over 12 years ago i used Hammerite Smooth over their Rust Beater Primer on my diesel all applied by brush after wire brushing and degreasing. All still good although i do spray with wd40 regularly.

Modern hammerite is very poor compared to the stuff of old.
Try Buzzweld stuff... I've heard it's extremely good. Or rustoleum kombi colour

Whatever paint you end up choosing it is still worthwhile getting rid of loose and scaley deposits and paint liberally with a rust converter (phosphoric acid based).

ACF50 is the goto stuff in aviation and motorcycle circles for this sort of protection - it is more effective than WD40 (but not as cheap).

Spraying things like WD40 or ACF onto the engine tends to make the whole boat smell.
Why is it rusting? It's indoors!

Not sure Hammerite is resistant to ACf or WD40 anyway? In a previous epoch, I painted bits of a moped with Hammerite (in the days when they advertised it in Exchange and Mart). The first petrol spillage awas messy, if a little colourful...

Olde worlde Hammerite was soluble in petrol, hence your experience in a previous life. ACF50 is basically light oil, WD40 is light oil and white spirit, neither should affect Hammerite today.

Hammerite finish has stood up to 1000+ hours on my engine with no problems whatsoever..........
except; Hammerite have discontinued my colour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that there are two advantages in sticking to the engine manufacturers house colour, first it is much easier to do; second. if you ever try to sell the boat some purchasers will be less suspicious regarding the engines history and maintenance.
