Hi, I’ll put this question up in another channel but as there’s still a little diesel in my blood and considering the wealth of knowledge normally on hand here, could I get some advice on the above?

We are going to head down in late July and rather than take our chances we’d like to find a base for a few weeks.
Preferably in a smart marina with good restaurants and from where we can day run to beaches/coves.

I understand a little about the WAZ’s and restricted anchorages but tbh I’m much more interested in which island might be the nicest to spend some time on, we have friends joining us who are going to want to relax, swim and eat....not looking to rave or drop any e’s

I’ve not been to the islands since I was a teenager and then it was only Lanzarote, so any opinions on the islands and any feed back on marinas would be very welcome...

Regards - Nigel & Ann

Nigel, are you looking for somewhere to charter a boat or stay on land?

For marinas, Marina Rubicon in Playa Blanco, Lanzarote will take some beating for class and good restaurants. Cruising by motor boats is pretty limited though in the whole of the Canaries due tot he high winds and Atlantic seas.

Thanks Pete, we’re sailing the catamaran down in late July, ready to cross from Las Palmas Grand Canary via Cape Cerde in November.

We will take the time to explore the islands and get some offshore experience. We will hope to get a run up to Madeira and back in during the theee months if the weather allows.

just got back..
This marina might be a bit tight for your craft. :)
Been to most of the islands over last few decades and visited most of the marinas but only by car.
No matter which island the weather really does appear to dictate everything with basically the fun being sailing from marina to marina with a serious lack (none) of nice coves or calas to hide in for a day sail.
You will need a decent length of chain to anchor as well , perhaps 1000m not that far offshore.:)
Took three days for the swell to subside of our most recent visit with noticeable lack of yachts out sailing spotted on the approach to the airport.
Tenerife.
The marina at Puerto Colón near Los Americas mirrors just about everything that attracts visitors to this part of the island.Probably the only place that folks would look at or care about the time piece on your wrist. :)
A good opportunity to brush up your Russian as well.
New marinas springing up all along the West coast.
Lanzerote.
Favorite spot La Graciosa just off the tip of Lanzerote.Wonderful location very basic port facilities
Puerto Calero has fairly refined decent marina with restuarants.
La Gomera.
Bit of working port and miles away from the ethos of Playa de las Américas.

No really really posh marinas a la Majorka etc, and quite a few semi working ones with active fishing fleets. All will have a decent selection of eateries somewhere nearbye.
Pretty sure there are yachting forumites down there who could go into real details and facts.

Never visited by boat, but have been to Puerto Mogan on Grand Canaria, and I liked the place.
No good for E's or clubbing, but there is a small beach and restaurants nearby.

Many thanks, yes a quick scan of Google maps and the lack of boats outside of the marinas is ominous! The Trades should be well in our favour during July and as long as we have a decent high pressure window, the sail down from Vilamoura should be a bit of a surf and hopeful fun...

Currently think Pete’s call of Marina Rubicon is a good shout for the first few weeks, we can explore La Graciosa to the North, even if that means beating into the wind for half a day...there do look to be some good anchorages on the W and S of that island but I think a permit might be required...

So perhaps a month in Lanzarote and then on to a more Westerly locale before we head into Las Palmas for the ARC meet up.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks, looks very nice and pretty well protected from anything other than a SE bashing, which is pretty unlikely. Will get on to their web site and check it out, prices this far seem pretty reasonable, (around €50 per day, for the larger marinas.

Thanks again
