Just preparing for a day skipper practical (for ICC and as a much needed refresher!) and realise how much of the yachtmaster theory I did years ago has been forgotton.

Our sailing has always been in areas where there is little shipping and we only do the odd night passage, consequently things get forgotton.

I need a reference book ( actually for the wheelhouse rather than cockpit) which deals with col regs, lights ( pictures in colour!!) buoys, flags sound signals etc. All the basics in fact. It would be nice if this book were 'easy to handle' perhaps spiral bound to lay flat etc.

I don't need navigation, sail trim and that sort of thing ( at least not in this book)

I will appreciate your recommendations on this

I have made a similar thing by colour printing an A4 table with all the colregs lights/sound signals etc, then laminating it, and waterproof it is.

Very similar to those you can find here, except I put into more evidence the elements I forgot more easily (like the preferred channel and sounds of overtaking vessels :D )

Incidentally, I keep on laminating plenty of things: tide tables, secondary port templates, Met charts... just use a non-permanent marker and wash away once done :)

IMHO This is the best

It is used by the military.

I also use http://www.flipcards.co.uk/

Have a look at the cockpit card link below. Covering Lights and Shapes, Buoyage, Sound Signals etc. Printed using light fast ink, heavily encapsulated, with any holes only going through plastic. very tough.

+2 - for the Reed's Skipper's Handbook. I should be on commission for the number of times I've recommended it!!
Mine is the 6th edition for 2010,Don't know if there is a 7th edition yet.
