According to the Times this is the 5th best chippies in the UK, but I have never heard its virtues extolled on here?

Scooby Snax, Brightlingsea, nr Colchester, London and South East England

Located in the seaside town of Brightlingsea, Scooby Snax is run by John McNeil, a former chef in the RAF. This is the second year running the shop has been crowned the best in London and the South East and its reputation means people come from all over Essex to sample his top-class fish suppers.

The shop serves an impressive array of seafood including cod, haddock, hake, salmon, plaice, lemon sole, tuna, squid and pollack. Fish can be griddled or fried and served with chips, a jacket potato or salad.

My personal favourite is Baileys on Southend seafront round the corner from the Kursaal.
 
I have heard very good things about Scoobie Snax but as yet not tried them. Perhaps in the spirit of the forum to share knowledge it is my duty to go there and eat.

It is almost a mile from the waterfront so you could argue that the walk there and back is the remedy for the effect on the waistline of a good portion of chips :D

It is licenced too.
 
Yes, they were on Look East that other local programme on the beeb about a year ago winning an award.
However.... the best chippie I know is 18 miles from the sea in my village Hethersett. Run by a load of Turks who do superb cod and chips (huge portions) and very good kebabs and pizza as well. You nearly always have to wait for the fish to be cooked...brilliant. always a queue on Fridays.
 
Have just checked the list, and am surpirsed not to find the chippie in Wetwang, East Yorkshire, listed. Always a must on the way to Whitby (which is listed), a stop for haddock and chips in the place most beloved of the late Richard Whiteley is pure culinary heaven. Beware long queues.
 
We've had fish and chips at Brightlingsea and found them delicious. This was from the shop near the landing quay. I wonder if the standard has to be high to compete with the award winning one? We knew about that one, but the long walk didn't seem worth it.
 
I went there last year with 5 others.


All were delighted with the quality of the food.....



and the little waitress was gorgeous too......


Highy recommended.


Next best I had were in Whitby....strangely last year too.

I can confirm from several visits that Scooby Snax Fish & Chips are excellent. Located halfway up Church Road at the junction of Well Street & Spring Chase on the way out (or in) of the town .. For those who remember Brightlingsea in the 60's this used to be the Bakers (forgotten the name)

We also had excellent F&C from this one last year, may not be award winning but very good. Nice to take them back to the harbour front and eat them on a bench on the quay. :D
 
Amazing, sailing out of Tollesbury we frequently berth in Brightlingsea but I have never heard of Scooby Snax.................. definitely on the 2010 to visit list.

The best F&C I have experienced are:

Magpie Cafe, Whitby................ definitely no.1, but restaurant prices.

Steels Restaurant, Cleethorpes www.steelscornerhouse.co.uk ............ superb F&C but located in an awful seaside town on a par with Walton ........... you wouldn't want to sail there! Apologies to any Walton residents but it is the worst place I've visited on the East Coast.

Winkies, Brightlingsea .................. never been disappointed.
 
Chippie

Although it is not strictly a fish & chip shop, may we recommend the Oyster Bar at West Mersea, which does the most fantastic fish & chips, as well as other dishes. Also, in good weather you can sit outside and watch the sunsets It is situated right on the waterfront opposite the Victory Pub.
 
As a local, Scoobies is without a shadow of doubt THE best chippy in Brightlingsea. Decent sized portions, REALLY fresh fish, good crispy batter.

The big tell is the size of the queue at all three chippies...the one on the Hard picks up the tourist trade, Winkies is almost deserted, but Scoobies despite the fact that John and his team are working flat out all the time, there is always a wait of at least 5 minutes...BUT you get freshly cooked food not drying out offerings!

Guess where all the locals go!
