Best buoyancy aid for dog?

Dog Buoyancy Aid

The important thing is the handle in the middle of the back, our dog, a collie springer cross is a good swimmer and very water confident, this means that occasionaly he has to be recovered with the boat hook. He wears a Baltic which he has had for five years, it has good broad straps under and a well stitched handle loop on the back. This is also useful for a rope when he has to negotiate tall harbour ladders etc. as he is not brilliant at climbing.

When there was a previous thread on this subject small dog owners said they preferred the ones with a velcro flap beneath. I have one crewsaver one with good wide webbing straps which can confidently take a collies weight and another with thinner straps and the velcro flap - this acts a bit like a straightjacket so if he walks through to the forecabin he has to reverse out as it stops him from bending enough to turn round!

Pickup handle positioned so the dog can be lifted without being tipped nose down. Wide straps that won't cut in while lifting. The position of the back strap is a bit critical for dogs, less so for bitches.

One of the most entertaining uses for a dog lifejacket is to hand it to a newbie to try on. I have caught quite a few that way.

We had tried several for our 'parsons' jack russell including a crewsaver one for a while but found the dog hated them and they where hardly a snug fit. Saw a dog in Falmouth with what looked a really good one and on enquiry discovered that it came from http://www.roughgear.co.uk. Really delighted with this product although it was expensive.

Upbuoy dog LJ

We got the UpBuoy Lifejacket for our terrier off Ebay. Really impressed with it. Gives excellent support under the chest when lifting the dog aboard - which I think is important. Also helps to keep him warm!

Good price too.

Just go on ebay and search for Upbuoy dog lifejacket to see an example.

Shorn

ps: I've nothing to do with the makers or suppliers just liked the product

That's like the cheap one I bought last year. It seems they are liked for little dogs but arenot up to lifting a collie around. The handle is startingvto tear from the orange fabric at the front, the velcro flap beneath restricts his movement and he gets too hot in it.

I think a Baltic or Crewsaver style, well made with adequate width straps is best for larger dogs.
