Best baggy wrinkle and how to afix it?

So in preparation to cross the pond, we have turned to baggy wrinkle .

We have pipe lagging that we were going to gaffer tape around the spreader ends.

It has to work and also last 3000 miles.

Any other suggestions?
 
The traditional one of course is two parallel strands of marline with short lengths cow-hitched around it, then the whole lot wound round the offending wire or rope:

However, I've also seen a more modern suggestion using strips of foam rubber (square cross-section, somewhere between one and two inches on a side). You spiral the rubber around the stay in one direction, then spiral a length of line back down it in the other direction, so that the two spirals criss-cross. I've never tried it, but supposedly it gives good protection and less windage than the shaggy types.
