Planning to venture to E coast this summer and may stay if SWMBO likes it there. I use a 16kg Delta (3 t cat) and all 8m chain and this has been fine for the past 13 years. I am wondering whether on the deep rivers mud whether a Danforth type anchor say a Guardian 13lbs would be a better anchoring option? I have done a lot of anchoring in rivers and never had a problem but if the e coast mud is as soft as reputed do I need a different anchor. I do not want to get into the Rocna/Manson/Spade direction unless there are really strong views that for the e coast rivers this is the way to go rather than a Fortress or Guardian.

Stick with the Delta. I have a Delta and a Danforth, the Delta holds perfectly OK in East coast mud. The one time I used the Danforth it took me 20 mins to break it out!

I got rid of my CQR Lookalike which was useless in E Coast mud. I now have a Manson which is excellent - also my kedge which is a Fortress is also excellent.

Like FC, we reckon that just about any anchor holds in the thick, black, smelly mud that we usually find in the rivers. The exceptions (that we have found) are in Walton Backwaters, where the weed sometimes (well once ) clogs the anchor and near the Ore entrance when we dragged through shingle (Just once again). We used to use a CQR and now have a Bugel - we are so lazy now that we rarely bother to motor astern to set the anchor (because we usually anchor under sail). The great thing on the East Coast is that if you do drag, you usually just drift into a soft mud bank and sit there until the tide turns - no damage!
Go with what you have and stop worrying!
