I think its fair to say that most European (and global for that matter) shows are having a tough time, just like anyone else...

I have emails from London still offering space, Düsseldorf still offering space and Paris still offering space and that's next week!!!

I think (and hope) that you will be pleasantly surprised by LBS this year, it wont be as bad as everyone thinks.

Anyone care to remember Earls Court when they barley covered half of EC 2? In fact they wheeled in the Radio 2 Road Show wagon to take up space, Ed something was his name...

2013 will be the one to watch and not just LBS.

Half the problem is that the owners of places like Excel have become used to being able to charge a fortune to rent it out to show organisers, who in turn have to pass on the cost to stall holders. If a couple of the big boys like Beneteau pull out (By the way does that mean Jeanneau as well?) a show like LIBS could be in trouble unless the building owners cut the rent. The question is do they demand £X for the show as before, or are they flexible enough to accept that in hard times half or three quarters of X is better than an empty hall?

I don't like to be the harbinger of doom but this is just another nail in the coffin of LIBS. The UK cannot support 2 'international' boat shows and neither does the market warrant it. LIBS is too close to Dusseldorf and manufacturers cannot afford 2 major shows in the space of 1 month. Not only that but manufacturers are finding more cost effective ways of marketing their products such as in house boat shows. As for next year, forget it as we'll be in the midst of a Eurozone inspired recession by then. £50 says LIBS 2013 doesn't happen

I'm not sure if that'll be the only reason (actually I think it won't), but I'm joining your virtual bet. I'd even make it a century. :)

The Business Rates on the Excel is probably dreadful. This is what costs the money, when we have an economic downturn like we are in now the Business Rates dont go down. Perhaps the show should be every 2 years rotating with the one that did not happen in Liverpool.
Also any venue which helps to promote exports should have a reduction in business rates. Perhaps the Boat Builders Federation (or similar if there isent one) should ask the Council for an Ex-Gracia reduction for the week of the boat show.

The question of SIBS or LIBS and whether one should go etc has been top topic for many dealers/exhibitors for at least 5 years now. For the last two years it has been 'wait to hear if the big boys go and them we will decide!'..... Now that Beneteau have decided not to go I am afraid to say many dealers of yachts and powerboats will not be attending.

NBS who organise the event must be very worried.... The show is dying and over the past 4 years this has be obvious and every year the partition walls close in to take up more space, the entrance area gets larger and now the show shares half of its space with another outdoor show!! Ticket prices go up, cost of food in the lobby goes up, hotel and transport prices go up....it isn't looking good.

I'm a fan of the boat shows and have worked in every one for the past 12 years but I am afraid to say it looks like LIBS needs to accept there is no longer the demand for this show.

Ok some clarification....

before I do I shall just climb down of the elephant that's in the room to give my honest opinion.

Yes - the show is not the best of shape BUT it is holding up well compared to a lot of its European counterparts including Düsseldorf and Paris who are both still taking bookings from the "big boys" as some say on here.

Lets not get carried away with the closing of the doors and the shrinking of the halls and perhaps remember that Excel has been extended considerably and LBS now takes the new bit as well as the old bit leaving a substantial amount of space which is where the other two shows go, they do not take up what was boat show space which has not been sold.

I think its fair to say the show will be smaller, they say 80% sold to date.

Lets remember the show is not all about the big power boys, the small power dealers have always done well from the surrounding areas and their passion for smaller trail boats etc.

But...despite all the huge efforts of the organisers which includes ourselves as media partners for some of the sail demo's, LBS struggles to attract the main stream sailboat manufacturers that is fact but you will still have the likes of Oyster, Northshore, Gunfleet (all British!!!) as well as some other European Manufactures that will give a good spread and claim that LBS is always very good for them, why would they go otherwise? The three I mentioned are all run by individuals that run incredibly successful businesses

Do I think it will be a success? I have no idea, do I think 2013 will go ahead? I honestly don't know, there is a lot of trading to be done between now and then.

Its a wait and see from me all I do know is what ever the financial climate may be if the crowds turn up to Excel they usually buy and that is a fact..

So lets pray for no snow (part from the Alps please someone up there...), good rail links and fair weather........and a bit of cash.

Tullett Prebon London Boat Show 2012

Whilst we are naturally disappointed that Beneteau have chosen not to exhibit at the 2012 Tullett Prebon London Boat Show, we have to respect their decision.

We would like to take this opportunity to correct a couple of misconceptions that have appeared above. Firstly, the Outdoors Show will be the same size as it was in 2011, the change of name that appears in some publicity represents a shift in their marketing emphasis, rather than an expansion of that Show.

It is fair to say that the current economic conditions are tough, but we feel that the 2012 Tullett Prebon London Boat Show will be a fantastic showcase of the UK marine industry.

Some key points-
• Over 90% of the available space has now been sold and still selling

• A new “start boating” area featuring 15 spaces for boats up to 6m LOA and ranging in price packages. Already half of this space has been sold

• Another new area for smaller dinghy boats has completely sold out, with over 20 boats of all types confirmed

• The Used Boat Marina in association with YachtWorld.com, which debuted in 2011, has almost doubled in size and will be back in 2012 with over 40 boats confirmed to date

• The exhibitor list to date is here (http://www.londonboatshow.com/2012/exhibiting/exhibitor_list.aspx) and further confirmations are being received daily. New additions to the South Hall include sail and motor boat brands Sessa, Rodman, Chris Craft and Legend along with Oyster Marine, Jeanneau, Prestige, Dehler, Bavaria, Cornish Crabbers, Southerly, Ovni, Hanse, Sea Otter, Larson, Haines, Regal, Antaris and Interboat

• As well as the boats and other exhibitor stands there will be a number of great attractions including Clarks Knowledge Box, Sail handling demo rig, Going for Gold, Yachting Monthly’s own Crash Boat and of course our massive watersports action pool.

I think the organisers have a huge problem to keep the event relevant to exhibitors and customers alike.

For me - and I imagine for many others - there are simply few reasons to go to the boatshow these days. I used to go because I could see a better range of .... than I could elsewhere (.... being my current interest, eg engines, propellors, boat shoes or books) but now a combination of the expansion of the internet and an apparent reduction in the number of exhibitors means that is no longer the case.

The days of a trip to the boat show being self-financing are long gone. So then it needs to be able to sell itself as a day out - and to give them credit I think the organisers are putting a real effort into that - so it becomes somewhere I might choose to go with the family for a day out - with some boaty interest on the side.
