Anyone got one ? Good points / Bad points ? Looking for a fastish cruiser (not for racing). Any other similar (length max 36) I should be thinking of ?. Sigma 33 I guess ?? Budget 40k "ish"
If the 345 is as good as the First 32, then it will be a great boat. I have the 32, which of course makes me biased, but I would not hessitate to recommend the early firsts, a fast comfortale cruiser that also performs well in racing.
I have had mine for 2 years now. She is a great boat, sails better then I can. Good accommodation for our needs. I'll gladly answer any specific questions or let you know about the various niggles I've had, but I'm too knackered now. Sorry.
PM if you like.
Rob
You could do a lot worse. I think the Beneteau First range is the best all round boats they ever built. There's an article in this month's YM about the owner of Cloud Walker, a 345 which has been cruised extensively incuding Greenland and Newfoundland.
I am ledto believe that the Sigma33's can not be rested on their keel as it distorts the hull upwards, hence they can not be left to rest against a harbour wall resting on the keel, how true is this????
Its total b*******, Sigma 33s have have been sitting on their keels every winter for 30 years, you are getting confused with something made in Europe with sandwich construction below the waterline. Also the OD version is faster than the masthead, is more available, holds its value better( more in demand) and there are still some around that have never been hard raced. They are very durable boats, usually with plenty of good sails and can be cruised anywhere that there is enough water.
The Sigma 33 I used to crew on always dried out on piles for scrubs and antifoul work when needed.
One of my crew bought a Contessa 32 for £14k because the brokers wanted the space for something a bit more profitable..
Its mast is a bit corroded in places and bits fell off the boom when I poked them a bit too hard ...
I race on one. Bigger than 34.5' and IIRC JJ of this parish said they were lightly built. Not so in my opinion.
Easily cruised two up and with a very decent turn of speed. Accomodation good but will be very tired if not recently updated. Look for original engine having been replaced by now too.
All in all a very respectable yacht of its time and likely to stand up to punishment well.
