Beneteau Antares 30 questions

Thanks Anders,

Twice as much fuel to go the same distance at 20kn opposed to 9kn!.
Between 1700 rpm and 2600 rpm is the MPG rate 1.69 or lower?

Regards Scott

I'll run some more tests between 1700 and 2600, but much above 1700 rpm boat must be heading out of displacement speed forming hump / bow wave? Would expect fuel consumption to increase sharply with not much gain in speed until she gets on the plane.

You must be enjoying some hot weather now?

Hi, i am a new member of forum. I need a advice on this boat. I am interested in purchasing a second-hand boat from 2010 year . This boat has a Yanmar engine with 550 hour. Recent boat have a volvo engine. Which engine is better ?
Thanks

I'm completely biased as I have the volvo version and am selling it but it has been brilliant and the engine has never missed a beat. Perhaps hold their money slightly better and service engineers are more readily available?

Things to look out for, I would say a stern thruster is a must, the first year I had mine without and as it is so tall for its length acts as a pretty good sail!

Thanks wonky, Its a Volvo, it has stern and bow thruster, canvas for fly and aft.deck, teak, heater, windlass front and back, extra batteries, Raymarine c90w below and another ray marine (don't know the model) on the fly etc. In my point of view very well equipped and it has some 180 hours on the engine.

For me it sound very good but is there anything that I should be aware of, I have never owned a boat with a fixed shaft, it this more or less of maintenance? How do you winterize this. I assume you do nothing except take the propeller of, is that correct? The engine i understand that I need to winterize accordingly, but does the Volvo have a closed cooling system?

Thanks for letting me ask my new questions :-)

I have the Volvo engine. Salt water cooled charge cooler, but engine is cooled by Volvo coolant via heat exchanger.

I didn't bother winterising mine, but boat was left in water. The coldest sea temp I saw as 5C through the winter. I had 1 x 80w tube heater on thermostat in engine room.

She cruises at 20 knots @ 3000rpm, great sea keeping too.

Today I made the order. I just bought a 2011 Antares 30 :-) and as I see it loaded with extras. Since this is my first Beneteau I will most likely have a lot of newbie questions for you all. :-)

Does anyone know how much load the swim platform takes, I am thinking of having a Sea doo Spark (200kg) on this, will that be possible?
What is the angle on the hull at the stern?
How do you empty the holding tank, do you pump it out in the sea and/or pumped out at a station?
Does anyone have a seawater pump installed? Where is this located?

Martin

Congrats Martin.

I doubt swim platform would hande 200kg, 30-40kg for a tender no problem. You would need serious davits to lift 200kg?

There's option to pump out holding tank overboard, or dockside pump out is next to diesel filler.

Seawater pump located in lazarette, forward starboard area.

Thank Anders,

Im really excited and I hope i will take delivery in 3-4 weeks. Then I probably will get back with more questions.

I have been looking at this instead of a davits, it seems to work quite well. http://hurleymarine.com/shop/dinghy-davit-boat/h3o/

200kg are like 3-4 grown ups, and I assume that the swim platform will take that, but maybe you can't look at it that way since it will be there for longer time and underway?
Is there anyone on the forum that have a tender on the platform and if so, what type of davits do you have?

Where are you based?

I'm not sure that one will be suitable, it will put massive force on small area of swim platform when you haul out. I hear what you're saying that 4 people can weigh 200Kg, but they would only use at anchor in relatively calm conditions. And in reality would 4 people sit on swim platform for extended periods, no.

Someone better qualified than me can confirm, but won't there be a leverage effect with 200Kg balanced on edge of swim platform?

That's true but I'm buying lightweight 2.5hp Suzuki. I plan to have bracket made to mount outboard on flybridge steps as it only weighs about 14Kg.

I won't keep tender or Suzuki onboard unless I plan to use it.

I bought tender last weekend, 3D tender superlight 250. I went with 250 as it has slightly larger tube diameter according to specs. The build quality seems fine, but time will tell. Very light though, easy to carry single handed. I went with lightest outboard, Suzuki DF2.5 which is a one handed lift at about 15Kg. Air deck works well, no slats to fit.

Had some fun and games with the outboard. It had been PDI'd but was supplied with no engine oil. When I topped up with oil, the oil level window had some condensation so I managed to overfill the engine....had to drain some out before firing up. I put a large bucket under the engine stand and did the initial warm up and break in on there.

I went out for a trip around a very windy Haslar marina, it blows around a lot. Takes some getting used to in close quarters, no reverse gear on this small engine.

Perfect size for my boat, still need to organise fitting of snap davits.

We had an Antares 9.8 with twin Volvos and never had any problem or smoke! Before we bought we were told the Volvo engines were the best to go for.
