Beneteau 311 handicap

According to http://www.byronsoftware.org.uk/bycn/ the Beneteau Oceanis Clipper 311 PY number would be 958 in its standard configuration with a fin keel.

The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme booklet RYA YR2 under section 5 "Listed Configurations and Allowances", table 5.4 recommends an allowance of -10 (from a listing for a fin keel configuration) for a boat with a lifting keel.

That would make the PY for your boat 958 - 10 = 948

Which in this case must be wrong.
The Beneteau 311 lift keel has the same arrangement as my Jeannneau Sun Odyssey 35 - It has twin rudders, and a wing keel, which are huge hydrodynamic disadvantages. Then there is the small matter of the extra weight ballast to make up for a deep fin, in my case 460kg.

The fin keel version of mine is quite racy, but I can level race with a bilge keel Moody 346 in average cruising trim without spinnakers. Bit of a difference.

Hi folks, thanks for the replies. I think the 948 must be way off. I am certainly no where near as fast as a standard fin keel. As mentioned above weight is a massive difference! I have also recently been in a six hour race and had a good battle with a sun odyssey 35 and we seemed to be very similarly matched. Are there any web sites that anyone can recommend with these figures on or is it down to local club handicaps?

Dont forget that the PY handicap is supposed to be adjusted by the club racing officer to reflect your results and your crew experience anyway.

The usual web site for club officers is http://www.byronsoftware.org.uk/bycn/byboat.htm which you then adjust for all the extras like lift keel, folding prop but not spinnaker which is already in there. It's not usually far wrong but it does look odd that the 311 is rated faster than the 321.
