Ladies and gentlemen,

The tube component of the keel lifting mechanism of my Beneteau 211 (built 1999) needs replacing because the female screw is badly worn and the bronze is going pink. I've contacted a reputable Beneteau dealer who tells me that a new lifting keel mechanism (apparently Beneteau don't sell the individual components) will be £842.57! This seems a hefty price for not much metal which doesn't have to be machined to very high standards. Does anyone know of where I can get the bit I need for rather less?

Thank you very much.

We had a similar problem last winter when repairing my son's 1985 First 29 with lifting keel. We were quoted over £600 for a complete lifting keel mechanism. We opted to get one of our local marine engineering shops to make us a new part. It cost about £60, a great saving. It all works well now.

One point to be careful about is the type of metal used, it is not just brass, I am not sure but I think it was manganese bronze, but others on this forum will probably advise you. Or if your machine engineer is familiar with marine work then they will know.

Make sure you take the stainless steel threaded part as well as the part you want replacing with you, so that the engineers can match it.

Where do you find such a place, depends on where you are, we are near Milford Haven which probably helps, we used Pier Engineering, 8 Haven Workshops, Pier Road, Hobbs Point, Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire. Tel: 01646 622 447 They were very helpful.

Good luck, George

Interesting artical, his bearing failed due to the cage going to Davey Jones` locker in dribs and drabs, common failure in type of thrust bearing.no wonder it was stiff to operate.
