Bembridge entrance buoys AIS 'seen' by a receiver up the Wye Valley?

Probably Pocket Mariner Ltd is receiving the data via satellite? It certainly would appear the harbour approach is fully AIS instrumented

Edit - they claim a network of monitoring stations all over the world:
Our ship tracking network uses a global network of shore and ship-based radio stations, which receive signals from the AIS system that ships use to broadcast their positions as they travel. Our receiver stations share the ship positions with our cloud-based data server, which pushes them onwards and out to our apps and web services.

So there's no way they're directly receiving AIS from Bembridge ...

I'm pretty sure they have multiple receiving stations all over the UK, and all over the world. I can't see how it would be possible to get worldwide AIS data from a single receiver on the Welsh Borders.

The equipment listed for Pocket Mariner Ltd is Boat Beacon AIS, which is an iOS/Android App, capable of uploading a position to Marine Traffic. So my guess is that Pocket Mariner are uploading the Bembridge Buoy positions, which may not even have AIS transmitters.
 
I emailed the Wye Valley and received a very prompt response:-
"These buoys are only visible on internet based AIS systems like Boat Beacon, SeaNav and Marine Traffic. They are not VHF AIS targets and will not be visible on VHF AIS receivers. MarineTraffic and Boat Beacon share some internet AIS information. On Boat Beacon and SeaNav they are correctly displayed as Port and Starboard buoys. Their position is from the published locations on the Bembridge Harbour web site. "

So, great news for some but users of web based AIS at sea may wish to consider how human error may creep in. First, are the harbour web site buoy positions bang up to date and correctly entered by the harbour staff and secondly, have the positions been accurately transposed to the web site by yet another human.

I'm happy that I now understand (enough).
