Friends boat.... AQAD41 with DPA drives (I think).

Drive is off, bellhousing shaft needs replacing. I'm presuming this needs to be removed from the inside? (ie. the bearing pushes forward for removal) hence engine out job? If so, do you also need to remove the bellhousing or can it be done in situ?

From "memory" with early outdrives you will need to drive out bearing from inside.
In my case bearing had seized on the jackshaft and fell out in several pieces.
The new bearing was made secure in bellhousing by peening and Locktite.
Not sure about later outdrives.
If the jackshaft is damaged there are various ways of using it again before descending into the Slough of Despond. aka The VP parts list. Again peening saved the day and about £750.00.
Need to move engine forward sufficently to access rear of transom assembly. In my case, 40B and 280T, combination was sufficent "slack" on fuel pipes and battery cables to actually leave them connected.
Seal wear on the shaft can be over come by inserting new seals in slightly different position from old ones.

Depends if the bellhousing has a single or twin bearing PDS. If single, it can be done from outside the boat with the leg off, albeit fiddly. If twin it has to come out from inside. The bellhousing can remain in situ, but it’s much easier with it off and in the workshop.

Many thanks. I don't have serial nos. of the engines / out-drives so i'm guessing there's no way to find out if there's 2 bearings on the shaft until it's out?

Either way, i'm guessing this is an engine out job!
