Have any of you spent any time cruising in Belize?

The good, the bad and the fugly, please?

Just a thought: I bet that if I asked the same question on that very septic centric forum, any thoughts of cruising in Belize would quickly vanish?

Pre covid, we spent about six months a year in Belize every year since 2007, what sort of information are you after? Are you interested in chartering or cruising

Initial ramblings
  • More expensive than the neighbouring countries. (Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras),
  • Sailing inside the reef is excellent and the outer atolls are also well worth time as well.
  • Time in Belize effectivity limited to 3 months visits by Customs.
  • Entry costs post Covid very much higher,
  • Rude officials, lovely people.
  • Avoid Belize City.
  • Provisioning and cayes with restaurants quite restricted.
  • Charts and chart plotters are to be taken with a very large grain of salt, up to a mile out in places, you have to use your eyes.
  • Last pilot book published in 2000' ish with hand drawn chartlets

Neighbouring Rio Dulce in Guatemala is beyond doubt is the best hurricane hole in the entire Caribbean in my view, 15 miles up a river behind mountains in fresh water.

I have attached a PDF of some cruising notes to get you started from an ex charter skipper who lived and worked there there for many years.

Have fun
