Being retired; painful

A friend of mine won’t make it to collecting his pension.

Stage 4 C and all the faff that goes with that. Absolutely devastating.

Seize the day-every single day- with both hands and enjoy it.

Because- We just never know do we?
Colleague of my brother retired at 65. Dead before he got his first month's pension payment.

Now it seems more normal for people to have part time work in retirement. Yet those people describe themselves as retired.
As someone who retired at 45 it’s become clear to me that there’s a distinction between retiree and pensioner. Retired people don’t work, pensioners get pensions. You can be one, both or neither, but if you’re working you’re not retired.

I think I preferred the old system where pensioners left the jobs for the young who need them more.

I think someone should start a new thread entitled:

“Being retired: blimmin’ brilliant”

I mean to say, yeah we’re all getting older and more poorly, but that’s life. As Larkin put it we’re all going down the long slide to the same destination.

But why not have a blast whilst doing so? While your faculties permit and you’re free of the need to waste 8 hours a day shuffling papers, or making widgets in order to pay the bills

Indeed. I disagree with the religious bit but there are other mindful ways to live your life that could meet the intent of his point.

I think a lot of people say ´retired’ when they mean changed profession

A lot of people use lots of words in the wrong way 🤣 in that scenario they ought to be saying “I’m an ex-policeman” or “I’m an ex-teacher” if still working. The definition of retired is permanently stopped working, although odd that it doesn’t mention intent as I have no way of knowing if I’ll have to work again in the next 40-50 years 😳

My Farther died at 62 my FIL died at 63 after retired at 60.

Brother died at 79 but his wife died early due to smoking and of because he was a passive smoker

I or my wife do not smoke and live heathy stopped working at 64 now almost 78 but continue working on hobbies (cars, boats woodwork etc.)

In my view you should not retire from you should retire to

Its just changing what you work at and not continue to just work for money.

The main issue I have is the inflation and cost of living

Was it you that quoted the telephone number Poole town quay overnight mooring charges ( plus electricity extra of course 😂 ) ?

I have little objection to sensible upgrades on boats like lovely new sails, engines, autopilots and windvanes ( etc etc and more etc ), supporting local businesses sometimes …

But.
And it’s a BIG But. A right royal pain in the Butt:

To be fleeced repeatedly over a barrel nightly with nothing to show for it bar bad memories, nah.
Nope .
No way.
Enough .

Imho and ime , your retirement t fund or income stream lasts a lot longer on board once you leave the UKs chargeable anchoring and mooring spots sadly.
So if you don’t want to go back to work to pay the harbour masters pensions…
Vote with the anchor? 💨💨💨⛵

Yes that was me. We only stayed one night and will be leaving the UK once we’ve finished doing Scotland etc.
Unfortunately retiring abroad isn’t as easy as it once was and the “retired” visas are actually “pensioner” visas which I won’t be eligible for for 20 years since savings and investments don’t count 😩

One thing I have developed in my old age is a deepening dislike of being told what to do; and especially of being told what's good for me.

I don't have to fully occupy my time, I don't have to do anything for the community, I don't have to exercise, I don't have to have a hobby, I dont have to make new friendships, I don't have to eat healthily, I don't have to drink less, .............

It's my retirement, I earned it, and I'll damn well please myself what I do with it!

I simply don’t believe that 😄

You should watch what you write

As I said…it’s all about personality types….you could try and change with hypnotherapy or reading philosophy books…teach yourself to kick back. Or you can hit retirement running…desperate to fill every moment.
Perhaps those that transition slowly….you know, grow the tits before you lop off the bits is the best way. Ease yourself physically, mentally and financially into the next phase of your life

Those that are self employed before retiring are likely to find the transition easy because they are used to thinking for themselves.,
