Being retired; painful

Very likely a case of once a saver then always a saver - and in an increasingly insecure and unstable world if you can pass the benefit of that comfort and security to your children and grandchildren when you no longer need it then why wouldn't you?
Because I don't have any.

If you have any habits as a young person...they tend to get reinforced as you age. People who suddenly in old age completely change their lifestyle are rare...which is why they write books and films about them. If you have always been careful with money, then seeing prices today is quite shocking....enough for you not to spend anything

You're right! These winkle-pickers are playing havoc with my bunions.

And no matter which barbers you go to, you can't get a decent DA, anymore.
It’s true though.....like life prisoners, they stick to the fashion that was on the day they get sent down.....and we are all prisoners to life

That is true, some prices do seem completely mad but not all. Diesel seems cheap but chocolate digestives are mad - I’ve swapped to ginger nuts.

When I wrote the above....I didn’t appreciate how much people can radically change in later life.....chocolate digestives to ginger nuts....you sir are an inspiration !

Don’t pick on me…you are still getting beaten up on the other thread
Au contraire, mon ami.

I have proved my point, and enjoyed doing so.

And you have learned somethng about windage on the bow. So think on, keep clear of any yachts on moorings or anchored in gusty weather, in case they take a lunge at you!

Indeed.

I don't object to spending money but if somebody's going to make a profit out of me doing so then I'd hope I'm getting reasonable value and a satisfactory product in return - and that seems to be happening less and less as world commerce becomes increasingly monetised and solely focussed on screwing the maximum possible profit out of every transaction.

The retired community in the UK is certainly feeling financial pain. As a nearly retired and for the last year a part time working person I perceive significantly fewer of them out and about on weekdays doing things that cost a little money.
