Being retired; painful

Sorry to disagree, corners are being cut to reduce costs (manufacturer and consumer) hence 'no profits.

The quality of the materials used in fit out has declined no longer solid wood - in some cases not even veneered ply! Take a tired old westerly/ moody etc and with time, sandpaper and varnish they can be restored.
Modern boats are built to a price, veneered? Locker edges become 'unstuck like the old iron on contiboard edging of DIY. Look at the interior of a modern ex charter hard used, not looked after by charterer, you will find trim coming off, plastic catches that don't work etc.
So, I feel costs are being cut, albeit to reduce prices to attract customers not for profit.
Boars now are like fast fashion (& other things) not designed to last.
I seem to remember one major European manufacturer saying boats should have a 10 year design life!!! Now think of the depreciation cost, similar to new cars.
Same with new mass produced houses, in many cases..
And 'Fast fashion',,, gggrrrr!

Work is a basic part of life. Not liking work is like not liking sex.

The number of people who don't like ANY work must approach zero on this site. Boat ownership is a job you never get to the end of. We curse that sometimes, but underneath it all I think that's a powerful reason why we do it. There's always work to do; no chance for boredom, even if we don't have other work.
I think that must be right.

I have a feeling that the OP was contemplating the transition from a narrower definition of work (whatever it was that paid the bills whilst occupying a large chunk of their time) to not doing that.

Fortunate is the person who is paid for doing what they would do anyway.

Perhaps, even more fortunate is the person who enjoys what they do without needing to worry about payment.

Go back to work! At something or another. Paid or unpaid. To work is a natural human need; lacking work for many means lacking purpose.

I personally have no plans to give up my work until they pry it out of my cold, dead fingers. The trick is to find work you really like.
Oh, please! In the ancient world 'work' was done by slaves. Most work is dull, dire and repetitive. There's a lot more to life than the cash nexus.

I have one friend who intends never to retire yet he complains constantly about work.
I think he is in denial regarding his age and mortality.

I think AI is going to catch a few out on their ‘ peak earning’ projections .

What happens then when you have nowt invested in a home and nowt to spend on fun, flings and fancies?
And presumably AI ‘workers’ won’t be paying taxes in to the system as we know it.

Nor will AI be calling in sick with Mondaymorningitius or skiving off early or come in to work with a vile hangover or spend hours bitching about colleagues or be fiddling expenses or wasting time in endless bloody meetings or disappearing on awayday gender awareness and diversity in the workplace training courses rather than getting on with the job it's paid to do.

I'm glad I don't need to go to work anymore and have to compete with that...

AI is a bubble. There is no "intelligence" in the system. Just programming - you turn the real world into a formal system, program to suit that system but unfortunately miss the bits which are not formal. I wrote a book on that in the late 80s. Still hold it to be true.

The wife was being driven crazy by phones with AI instead of call centers.....if she ever sees an AI ...she might kick it

But what you say is true of most jobs - no need for (or even room for) ‘intelligence’/creative thought. It’s clearly not ‘intelligent’, but that it will be exploited to do most of the work seems inevitable. So not just a bubble, but not the complete answer… yet.

I know virtually nothing about AI but it somehow disturbs me that there are a load of recent articles explaing how some AI is writing its own stuff. This, allegedly, has smart people getting sweaty.

Should I really care?

Yes because humanity is a symbiotic sort of ( possibly highly disfunctional ) arrangement between all of us.
And when the next generation en mass feel disengaged and hungry…yada yada .. no more food chain no more rental incomes blah blah .
As ever it was historically when faced with rapid irreversible changes.
Anarchy and military rule might be worst case scenario if AI really is a significant labour market Step Change for the professional classes . I dunno, I tend to be pretty optimistic but you can think these things any way you like I guess ?

Might really mess up a nice retirement plan..

Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!😎

Choose your crisis... between the climate crisis, rising nationalism, mass migration, war in Europe, the Middle East... Any and all of these are charlie foxtrots that are going to affect the societal weal. For the moment, I'm putting AI in the same risk category as invasion by aliens or the zombie apocalypse. But owning a boat and a bit of self-sufficiency are good hedges against most of them.

Exactly!

Journalists are making hay! Turn everything into AI and publishers rip your arm off for it. The classic case of a bubble.
